Default EAD card / SS number

PROBLEM:

Entered as K1, Got married, filed I-485 (perm res.) and I-765 (work auth)
Finally got my EAD card today (from the completed I-765)
Went to the Social Security office to get my social security number (without
it, the EAD is completely useless. I can't work with just the EAD I need
the EAD + the SSN)

They tried to look me up in their systems (with my name and the "A" number
that figures on the EAD card) but couldn't find me.

QUESTIONS:
1 - Has anybody been through this? what are your experiences?

2 - If you have been through this, how long did it take for you to be able
to get your Social Security Number?

This is normal. It will most likely be weeks or months before verification is received from INS. A well-informed individual at your SS office should be able to tell you about how long it takes. If you need the number quickly, I suggest you go to INS and ask them to FAX the verification form over to the SS office.

Here's a question for you now...

I just received my EAD card (today actually!)
went to the social security office to get my social security number but LO
AND BEHOLD! the SS office wasn't able to confirm my EAD registration in
their computer systems (they checked with my A on the EAD card)
They therefor, didn't issue me a SS card.
Here's my question to you:
How long did you wait, after getting you EAD card, to get your SS number?
Did you have a similar problem?

Thnx

Chris

This has been a FAQ for the last few months. SSA MUST verify your status with INS before issuing you a card. The wait time depends on several factors:

1. Speediest of INS updating the data base.

2. If SSA has to write INS for a verification.

3. Or if SSA holds onto the inquiry for a week or so and trying the data base again before asking for verification in writing.

The wait time could be one to eight weeks.

One of the main reasons why K-1 recipients should file for their SS number asa their arrive in the US.

Plenty

Well you may be lucky, but I would figure on at least a month before SSA can
have your status verified and issued your SSN.

Since, you have the EAD you have INS work authorization and the EAD is all you
need to show your employer when filling out the INS I-9 form. Not sure if you
have to have an SSN to start working. You need to provide an SSN at some point
for tax withholding and wage reporting (W-2). Call IRS and see what they say
1-800-829-1040.

Take care,

Mike

This is on the SSA employer FAQ page:

Q. What if one of my employees does not have an SSN?

A. Advise your employee to apply for an SSN card as soon as possible and show it to
you when it is received. It will only take a few weeks to receive the card once SSA
has received all the documents from the employee that are necessary to process the
application. On your records use the SSN exactly as shown on the card and use this
information for any W-2 you later prepare for the employee. Call SSA's 800 number
(1-800-772-1213) for SSN applications.

http://www.ssa.gov/employer/paperq&a.htm#ein

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So based on that you can start working without an SSN. SSA can give you something
to show you have applied for an SSN, so that can buy you some time if someone is
willing to hire you.

I applied in the same office you probably did in the US-75 Dallas TX, they
gave me that receipt that says that I should be receiving the card in 2
weeks.

I didn't received it and I went on the 3rd week to inquire the status.

The lady couldn't give me a satisfactory explanation, she only showed me a
screen print of two pages of her system, one saying everything is ok since
the application was filled through an employment authorization.

The second page said under investigation. I presume that comes from the back
verification with the INS.

It is possible to find an employer who will hire you even if you don't have
an SSN, they normally give you a 90 day period to show it to company.

I had a German friend; it took her 6 months to get her card.

But my friends in Dallas tell me it takes about 5 weeks.
