Re: Drivers license ?
Originally posted by inquisitive40 Yes but your visa was valid when you got the license, you were in status? Although I know some states actually date the license according to your visa dates and so once you go out of status you also lose your license. In California, Davis was going to give all the illegal immigrants a chance of a driving license by doing away with the SSN requirement, the Californians all thought that there would be a ton of Mexicans allowed to drive that were not driving under the SSN policy, Arnold reversed the Davis law and so SSN is still required. My question at the time was "do the people living here think that those same Mexicans are not driving illegally as it is?" All the Davis change would've meant is that those drivers would have a license and might get insurance. Patrick I am glad you are going AOS yourself.. That will save you tons of money, be sure to ask every little thing in the NG ok??:) I could help too:) |

Re: Drivers license ?
Colorado DMV actually says that non- resident aliens do not need a license, no time limit.
Mind you the Handbook also says that vehicles must give way to Pedestrians at Pedestrian crossings. Outside of Boulder City limits, I have yet to have that pleasure. |
Re: Drivers license ?
Like others have already said, licensing requirements vary by state.
As far as handing over your foreign drivers license, when Mark got his VA license, he got to keep his UK one. They never even asked to see it. We had been worried about them asking for it, but it never came to pass. If it had, however, we were prepared to tell the VA DMV that they did not have the right to confiscate it. Mark's drivers license is a UK government document, and thus another country's government agency doesn't have the right to confiscate it. We don't know if this is actually stated anywhere in law, but it certainly makes common sense! ~ Jenney |

Re: Drivers license ?
Actually in Canada when you apply for a Canadian license you have to surrender your driver's license from the country you came from. So, yes, some countries do make you relinquish your foreign driver's license.
As Ian pointed out, in Kentucky as in New York State, if you are a Canadian your license must be surrendered at the time you are giving your new state license. I believe that is because in those states Canadians do not have to take a driving test to get a license. It is an even exchange. In NYS resdiency is defined to mean when you have set up a household in the State. You have x number of days to get a state license. The fact that you have migrated to the US and/or applied for a green card is proof of your residency. Rete Originally posted by Exile "andrea874" wrote: > Or you could do things the legal way and not have > more than one valid drivers license at once... I think you're confusing laws in different countries. One countries laws don't apply to another's. Country A can no more insist that you don't have a driving licence for country B than it could prevent you from owning property or having a bank account in another country. Andy |
Re: Drivers license ?
As it turns out, I got mine without any problems the second time I went back. They didn't even want to see or keep my foreign one.
I never would have thought it would go so smooth after the K1 vs AoS argument. |

As Jenney says (and I said earlier) one country doesn't have the right to revoke something granted by another. Imagine if an American emigrating to another country was made to turn in their US driving licence. I'm sure it would seem more "proposterous" then ;-) Andy |
