What would be the best way to keep my British license and have a united States license?

Driver's licenses are issued by the state, and the rules are different from state to state. Check with your local county clerk's office or DMV for information. I was required to turn in my Canadian DL when I got my Kentucky DL - most states don't allow you to have two licenses, but YMMV.

You may get to keep it - I still have mine.

Contact your local DMV. Do a search on google for whatever state you live in DMV... I'm sure they have the guidelines on their website.

Try this site to find out about the specifics for obtaining a drivers license when you have an out-of-country license.

there is an international drivers license that you can apply for that is good in both countries.

I can't see that it's the right of one government to take away from you what
was given to you by another.
Can't you just tell them that you've lost it?

Alternatively, why not hand it over and then tell the British DVLA that
you've lost it and you want to pay for a replacement. I think it costs
about a tenner.

I edited this part out because I don't want to make someone do something that might not be acceptable.

It costs $35 to get a state DL here.

There's an easier way, make a color copy of your canadian/european license. Leave your original in your US home.

Go to the DMV and show them the copy, if they ask you where the original DL is, tell them it's in wherever country it was issued from. (ie : you don't have it).

Or you could do things the legal way and not have more than one valid drivers license at once...

I don't see the point in handing in my license, because whenever I go back to Europe, I need that license to drive.

Furthermore, my home license is valid until I die.

This has nothing to do with having more than one license. I just want to be able to drive whenever I go back to where I come from, and that is none of the DMV's concern.

I thought this only applied to state drivers licenses not out-of-country ones...

If it's not legal to have an out-of-country drivers license as well as a state one then why do I still have mine?

Oh, I apologize, I didn't mean to state it as a fact like saying you can't have an out of country drivers license. I have no idea if you can or not. My point was that if they make you surrender it at the DMV, its not that bright to go and lie to them about it and tell them you don't have the actual license.

I have been in the US off and on for 2 years (Seeking to establish residence here.. as I am a K3) and I still have my Spanish driving license, I think you should be able to keep your license, my friend Sarah is british, she has been in the US for 10 years.. and she still has her british driving license:)
Take care!!
