Does my IR-1 approval invalidate my B1/B2?
I'm assuming that the approval for an IR-1 will invalidate my existing B1/B2. Obviously, I can't be a non-immigrant and an immigrant visa holder because that wouldn't make sense. The issue is my B1/B2 isn't in the same passport as my IR-1 will be, it's in my previous passport which I still have at home. Do I need to do anything to get the B1/2 invalidated or is it just done automatically in the system?

IT's not invalid, since you could, in theory, attempt to enter using your B2 (with the intent of a visitor, of course) before using your IR-1.
Just leave it in the passport and it will expire, no big deal.

Good point. It's just that my B1/2 is a 10 year with 8 more years to run so I didn't want to not do something I'm supposed to! Thanks

There is a provision in the Foreign Affairs Manual [aka "FAM"] that allows for issuance of a B-2 visa to a green card holder. Apparently the idea is that there are circumstances where an LPR may legitimately be in a long sojourn outside of the US and needs to make a brief trip to the US.
That said, back in the day when I would personally appear at immigrant visa interviews in Asia, the ConOff would normally invalidate the NIV.
