I understand neither Rete's nor Ian's latest post. Did you read this post from LadyM?

My reaction is not clinical as it should have been but personal. I have a dear friend whose daughter is involved with a man who is the father of her third child. He is currently in prison for the second time for beating her senseless. The last time he broken her jaw, two ribs and damaged her eyesight. He is due to be released next week and she is going back to him. Both my friend and I know that the next time the call will be that she is dead at his hands. There is little a mother can do for a daughter who is 37 years old and willing to place herself in mortal danger. All she can do is be there if needed, pray, pray and pray some more.
