Re: ChippySupper's Rant on Naturalization and Its Quiz
I agree that CS's post was highly insensitive and inappropriate.
But those of us who are stuck here, for whatever reason, may be equally offended by the *if people aren't happy in the States then... "why don't they just go back to their own country?!"* type of comments.

My oh my!
Yet more people leaping onto the bandwaggon as if it were the last chicken in (insert supermarket name of choice)!
Jenney & Mark, I am not in the slightest moved from indifference. Honestly.
Discoviking, giving up your Norwegian nationality must have been a huge step, and not one to be taken lightly. It was your decision though, and I respect that. I'm just glad it all went smoothly for you
sunflwrgrl13, 'I dislike America' - exactly where did I say that? Where was there even the gentlest whiff of dislike on the breeze? You are imagining things my dear I had read the original thread out of curiosity.
Ian - your interpretation of this matter is incorrect. I really don't see the USA as a former colony.
What is the problem with wanting to live / work in the US without being a citizen? I am very proud to be British, but living in the USA means adapting to the local culture and integrating into society as far as possible, obeying the laws and generally behaving nicely. I have no problem with that, and if that means renewing a Green Card every 10 years (if I ever get one!) then so be it.
Once again kiddies, nobody is benefitting from continuation of this thread, so maybe it's time to lock.

Citizenship can have its benefits, especially if you plan on moving back to the UK someday.

Nothing at all is wrong with that, and my own husband wasn't sure if he wanted to apply for naturalization until just last year. But it was the way you capitalized "I wouldn't want to BECOME one!" made it sound like it was a horrible, horrible, unthinkable thing. Which it is not. It's a personal choice.

Well, I guess he was never taught, "It's not what you say but how you say it".
Please, would one of the moderators just go ahead and close this thread already. Even the OP realizes how inane his comments are and is asking for the thread's closure himself.

But I agree that the thread will only continue to make bad feelings among the rest of the group. At least OP knows which posters to put on 'ignore' now, although it looks like it might cut into his information pool quite a bit...
Fortunately, most of us here know each other a bit and we know that naturalization is a worthy achievement for the people who have pursued it, and one crappy post can't take that or its joy away from anyone.
Rene didn't let me finish typing.
