I currently live in Calgary and have two boys aged 6 and 8.
Calgary offers a range of educational choices, although I am not sure how the system compares with the UK.
The public and Catholic schools do vary from one area to another, so do quiz your realtor about the schools. The Fraser Institute publishes a report card each year on all schools in Alberta. While it is not definitive it can certainly assist you in your decision.

Many schools have websites: the public school board's can be accessed through www.cbe.ab.ca. These portal sites can really help with the feel of a school.
The IB programme is not offered in Calgary until High School (age 15/16).
Alberta does offer charter schools. There is a girls school, science school and a few programmes for gifted children that you may want to look at. Generally there are wait lists for these schools, but depending on your time line they could well be worth a look. More info is available at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberta_charter_schools
I hope this helps and good luck.

I wonder if my kids are normal! I have 2 daughters aged 10 and one coming up for 8, they seem to have less worries than i do about leaving the Uk and they can't wait to start their new life in Canada. I haven't heard a single complaint, even when we first started looking into Aus and then Nz before we settled on Canada!

They have been absolutely fabulous about the whole thing, though maybe a little startled at first.

My younger lad did have a good weep when he came to leave his friends, but never, not once, did either of them say they didn't want to come here. Indeed, the only criticism has been that we didn't do it years ago!
My lil lad did have a bit of a wobble after a few months, when he said that although he'd made loads of friends here they were "not like" his friendships back in the UK. Poor scrap. We had a long chat about it, and he understands that lifelong friendships, such as he had, were not made in a matter of months.... these were kids he'd grown up with. He seems totally happy with his new buddies now, and still keeps some contact by internet with a handful of UK mates.
