2004 form is irrelevant. It's today's form that matters. Giving a player several 'off' games and hoping he'll come good might be acceptable, but at some point you need to look elsewhere, and to my mind there are a number of players that have had too much faith put in past performance for too long.

Really? And hasn't he played enough football this year to be on form?

But the point is he's quite obviously not at his best, nor devastating in any way. Should we just wait for him to be ready and able?

Yes- unfortunately he is the one player with a guaranteed name on the team sheet as he is the only World Class player in my opinion

Hoddle and Venables were both better but not in the job long due to non-footballing reasons.

Surely you won't discriminate against yourselves. There must be a couple of 1st class English coaches that are capable.

So was there was a degree of risk taking him due to lack of match fitness? And yet he was still persisted with after 3 poor games.

No player should ever be guaranteed a place, that's just a cop-out and doesn't incentivize a work ethic to get into the team on merit and form. Over paid prima-donnas need a wake up call sometimes.

I've had a quick play around with stats regarding previous world cup penalty shoot-out wins (I think someone posted earlier in the thread about this?)

Excel tells me, on average:-
Spoiler:
  1. There's a penalty shoot-out every 5.6 matches
  2. Only Germany,Argentina or Brazil are worth selecting (to win)
  3. The chance of getting the score right is as follows:-
(4-3) 26.3%
(5-4) 21.1%
(3-2) 15.8%
(5-3) 10.5%
(3-1) 10.5%
(4-2) 5.3%
(4-1) 5.3%
(3-0) 5.3%

Goldfish thinks this is going to be an above average year.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Capello picked him on the basis that his form would return.

The public backlash of Capello not picking him for any game would have been massive.
