Winter Footwear - Calgary

I don't know if you have one where you live but they are also online. I like the Kamik brand for more heavy duty boots and I'm eyeing up a nice pair of wedge heel boots for a little more style.

I wear the same shoes etc i wore in the UK..as long as they have tread/grip on the soles no problem..why you would want to wear hiking boots (if your not hiking) is beyond me

I also vote for the YakTrax or similar, I actually prefer the ones that look like they have bolts in them, find them more grippy.
The warmest everyday boots I have bought are sofmocs version of Uggs - I think they are ugly things but they are warm. For tobogganing etc you want a waterproof insulated boot, you can go mega money or cheapo walmart ones will be fine. I picked up my 'winter' boots in the sales the 1st summer for $35 they are Columbia and weather rated -20 odd, I wear them for dog walking mainly, they are not as warm as the Uggly things though.

Lululemons are what the Mum's are all wearing in my part of Calgary.

Re your earlier critique of the boots
I have fashion boots and also a pair of Uggs for commuting. I travel by transit and fashion is not my top priority - keeping warm at the station and not falling A over T is!! Over the past six winters I have seen many people come a cropper in their fashion boots and it ain't worth it. When it's cold in Calgary nobody looks at your feet anyway - they are too busy keeping their faces from freezing off!
I also have a selection of boots, shoes and a spare coat at work. I have often arrived in a blizzard with all my winter stuff only for it to warm up and be about 30 degrees warmer for my journey home (or vice versa).

For several years after we got here I wore some "snow boots" that I bought from a catalogue the year before in the UK. I think they were made in Germany?
They cost 12 pounds something, and finally cracked through the sole. I bought something similar here, but a bit more "chunky". They tend to be too warm!
I still wear my old ones though if we are going skiing: they are just BLISS to put on after ski boots: all loose and comfy
And yes I wear the yak-trax things too!

I would say something like this will see you right

You can forget your spikey heeled trendy boots (a lesson learned). This sort of boot is pretty much a staple, warm, looks awesome with skinny jeans when you take your snow pants off that you will wear over the top!!!!!
Being trendy (certainly around these parts) means wearing North Face / Helly Hanson etc.
When it gets super cold you don't give a shite whats on your feet as long as you are warm
