Can anyone advise on what shoes I will need for winter in Calgary? Just for general walking around, not planning on hiking any mountains in the snow, just day to day stuff.
My husband is just planning on wearing the same hiking boots he wears in the summer. However I've seen boots starting to appear in stores that are thermal lined, suitable for up to -40C etc....
I would have thought we wouldn't be wearing the same shoes in winter as we wear in summer...but maybe I'm wrong?
Thanks for any advice!

It's going to depend a lot on what you are doing in the winter. I used to walk my son to school everyday when he was younger down a hill and through a field. I had thermal boots for that and also for going tobogganing.
Now, if I am just driving to work I will just wear a pair of regular leather boots with some grips on the bottom and change into shoes when I get to work. I probably could do without them as I go from my home garage to my work parking lot but I always wear them just in case something happens on my way to work and I might need to get out of the car. On stormy days I wear my thermal boots to work for the same reason. Also, I may want to go for a walk at lunch time.

None of the above advice applies to teenagers, for whom Converses or ballet pumps are suitable footwear even at -30C.

My best purchase was some of those grippy ice thingies - cleats or somesuch name - that go over your shoes/boots. $10 from Costco, or available in Sportchek, Atmosphere, MEC, etc.
I can tell you how many times I nearly went A over T while walking dogs. Those things are great! And you don't need to spend $$$$ cos you probably won't need them for that many days.

My first winter I dressed warmly with sensible boots, coat, hat, gloves. There has been a snowfall overnight. I trekked in from the parking lot alongside a 20 something in killer heels on FM boots, a tailored coat and chic hat. I felt like a bag woman.

I wore my sensible snow boots everywhere for the first winter here. Last year was a mixture of converse and my leather boots. My snow boots only came out for one week of heavy snow.
In fairness that may have been that I couldn't do them up by myself as I was heavily preg last winter

Ugh, I'm sure it was a typo, (I call them Ughs anyway). Don't worry, there's tons, since we got the wheel all the stores have re-stocked. 50 years ago (imagine a time before all our stuff was made in China), in small towns it wasn't so easy - the Sears and Eaton's catalogues came for spring and summer, and fall and winter, and a smaller Christmas catalogue, (and that was the really exciting one!), and to a large extent that determined what we wore. Now it's so easy to get to the city, (unless you're in a fly-in area, or the Arctic), everyone takes it for granted.
+1 on the ice creepers or shoe cleats, I bought them a year too late, after falling. There will be times when it's prudent to wear them, and you can hide them in your purse or under the car seat. I don't buy any clothes or shoes at Walmart, I bought a pair of shoes there once and they were garbage.
Missleah, you must be starting to feel like a real pioneer by now!
For 150 years men have been bringing their wives out here and getting asked, "What the hell kind of place have you brought me to?!"
