I have had my leg pulled ever since I got to Canada regarding the winters. I wondered if I could get a straight, honest answer to my question.

What kind of out door coat would I need.

Ontario is massive. Where in Ontario? What do you plan to do when you're wearing said coat? Are you looking for a coat to wear to and from the car to the door of your house? Or are you looking for a coat where you can go wilderness hiking for 5 days straight? The answer really depends, honestly.

I live in Burlington. I have winter coats from the UK which I think will be OK for when I go out in the car, shopping. I dont want to be restricted in the winter so I wondered what I would need for when we go out walking or getting about without the car.

I would suggest a down jacket. Expensive investment but absolutely worth it. I paid $300 for a North Face one from a consignment store in Van and it has been worth every cent.

I have a long very heavy sheepskin coat...trouble is when I go indoors it's too hot and the coat is too heavy to carry. It's like carrying another person around.

A long down coat...with a hood. I would wait until you arrive before buying coats, boots, gloves etc...you'll probably not get anything warm enough in the UK.

You will find most teenaged girls go out with bare legs and short skirts no matter what the weather. You will never see a teenage boy in a down jacket, or winter boots - he would rather be dead: unless there's all kinds of ski-lift tickets attached to said jacket.

If all you are doing is going from car to house and house to car to work etc then you probably don't need mukluks and arctic gear.

The worst thing about winter is if you let it get you down.

I've been colder in the pennines. Zero degrees, horizontal wind and rain, soaked to the skin. Ugh And thats June!

I think we should report Miss Clinque to a MOD because she mentioned the word winter much too early. After all there are protocols to be followed here. In her next thread she'll probably bring up Christmas, FCS.

A long coat to cover your arse. It needs buttons so you can do the coat up quickly when moving from car to building. It needs a zip closing for when you are outside in the cold. A hood is useful too..

Everywhere is overheated in the winter and you will be too hot in anything but Tshirts so a very warm coat is essential so you can take it off indoors.

Down isnt necessary but warm is. I got a good coat from Sears for under $100.

You won't go wrong with an Eddie Bauer down coat/jacket - he was the inventor of the down jacket and for 30 years(or summat) the only brand you could get with the 'waffle' style down fill. I will stand behind what I say about the EB stuff, I sell it and I bought a 365 down jacket last year, it is really warm and light and squishes down to fit ina little bag for when your shopping and stuff. The first accent stuff has been guide tested - a little pricier, just getting it in store now and it's really nice - might want another EB jacket this year

I saw a goose filled parka with a hood and it was beautiful, but $565 !!! but sound like it could be an investment. .....well thats what I plan to tell hubby.
