It has been a nice dry day for once. Just spent the last hour watching a tug boat unsuccessfully refloat a barge that ran aground in the last storm. I think they’re going try again tomorrow at high tide. Tune in for the show.

Default Winter 2021-22

Vancouver got a hefty dump of the white stuff overnight. Prepare for absolute chaos on the roads today...

I think winter is over for us.
It hasn't snowed for weeks and the temperature has been hovering between -1 & +3 which is nice.

12c today in Calgary. Two weeks of minus 10-25c over Xmas and NY then plenty of days well above 0 this past few weeks. All the snow has gone. No doubt we will have another freezing spell before long.

Though we were never 'completely trapped' like the subject of the video, when I arrived in Canada we had several winters in the late 60s and early 70s where accumulated snowpack up to the eaves of the house just seemed normal to my sister and me as kids. We built extensive networks of snow tunnels in the front yard each winter, complete with pop-up 'fortresses' from which we threw snowballs at each other, and assorted friends.

Our parents worried that the tunnels might fall in on us, but in the springtime they grew damp and unpleasant to play in long before they actually collapsed.

Great fun while it lasted!! I doubt I'll ever see winters like that again.

My final winter in Winnipeg was rough (famous last words).

In Winnipeg we generally find that winter can be mild (0 to -20) with lots of snow. Or it can be sunny and cold (-20 to -40). This year unfortunately we got both the cold and the snow. We don't get huge snow falls as there's not a lot of moisture in the air. In fact the biggest snowfall I've seen in 15 years here was probably a 6"-12" storm. This winter has been around -20 with wicked wind chills since December and in that time we've seen snow storm after snow storm. There's no where left to put the snow. I'm glad it's starting to warm up but the forecast still isn't that great, we are seeing nasty winds with temperatures fluctuating between -5 to -15 for the foreseeable future.

The end of 2021-2022 winter can not come soon enough! It's a good year to be quitting lol.
