My Mum wanted an original name for me so called me "Amy Louise" (this was back in the 70's!!). When I moved up to secondary school there were 4 Amy Louise's in my year... Two Amy's, one Aimee and one Ami.

Obviously though, I am the original and the BEST Amy around...lol

I don't think it's so much that we can't pernounce your name, i've never had any trouble, if your saying it to someone that never been around a UK accent they might not understand, aswell as Gaynor isn't a common name? Depends on the people, theres still alot of ignorant people in Canada.

They even have trouble with my name, get asked "what's your name?", I say Paul. They kind of look at me blankly. I repeat, Paul. Only after I put on a ridiculous US accent and pronounce it Pawwul do they then say "ohhh, Paul".

Strange, Tasha is a common name. I can hear Taysher though, with Canadians confusing the accented A for ER if said quickly.

They probably heard "Poe"

I think you've highlighted the key issue here. The name itself isn't what's foreign to the Canadians, it's likely that they've never heard those names spoken with such an "accent".

I have found that most Canadians pronounce "Vader" as "Ludicrous".

Perhaps it's a regional thing?

I should think not. I'm a Geordie. And you likely don't want to know how we pronounce Vader.

I told you that immigrants should learn English when they come to Canada.

You may have the EH part down pat though

Yes, I've seen that, very droll.

Perhaps you have a link for the accent most often used by helmeted nincompoops who believe that Canada is still living in the early 1950's?
