Isn't society, encouraged by the current government, going in the opposite direction? I can't imagine that, even under Thatcher, it would have been acceptable to have a television station with commentators endorsing such ideas as lifeboats choosing who to rescue by colour. Deporting adults who arrived as children, committed no crime, and paid taxes is, similarly, not something the Conservatives would have done in an era when they liked to imagine themselves to be decent people.

Isn't that more a function of historical reality and the demographic make up of the population? I am not sure you are suggesting this but I can't understand why anybody should have power based on any characteristic other than competence. Clearly incompetent white folks (and, yes, mostly white men) get to the top easier than other groups. Should we use quotas so that incompetent <insert group> gets their "share" of the power? Forcing that is likely to bring about worse results than what was originally the situation.

As a footnote, I hope we deal with racism in the UK in UK terms, and in the UK context, stop importing American issues and imposing them as if they were reflective of the situation in the UK.
