Good to hear she's ok!

I think JSmith has had a very tough time in Canada in general, for one being a lifetime renter in BC is pretty miserable as house prices and rents spiral out of control, plus it seemed like he struggled often with his mental health. I hope he is doing ok as well.

I recall often having differences with Siouxie and honestly don't miss her at all, - if I may allow myself to be that frank. At times I was scared that Siouxie would be able to ban me as some forums can be very unpredictable regarding banning of users for whatever reason. Regarding opinions I didn't find her mild-manaered at all, but people's opinions and perceptions may differ here.

I remember the 'pools bloke' knocking on our door once a week and my Dad had nearly always forgotten to have his completed Football pools slip ready by the time he came around.

Funny how I still have this memory from the late 70's but I can't remember what I had for dinner last night.

Ah yes....I remember that too! it was always a mad rush while the bloke was waiting at the door. lol I have a very good vivid memories of childhood....late 70s and such.... glad to hear I am not the only one that doesn't remenber what I had for dinner last night :eek:

So that's the end of the thread, I guess. Nothing other than whimsical / irrelevant input anyway, for the last several posts.

I actually did care about the answer to the original premise of the thread. I had my disputes with her, particularly over the "future of Hamilton", whether writ large or small, based on the experiences of my own small tribe. But nothing that couldn't have been settled -- or not, or not quite -- over a coffee or a beer.

If someone who does know what happened is willing to share, I'd appreciate the input via PM.

I suppose it may seem that way with a bit of thread drift going on. However it also does something to keep the query on the main page at the same time in its way.

Perhaps ask BE Admin direct although they are not required to explain their actions : or maybe PM to DandNHill and ask to forward a message to Siouxie.

What I can say is that when someone is banned , be that a temp sit on the mat or a perm ban, there will have been a ban message giving the clear and full reason for the ban. There is recourse to that via the Contact Me form. Admin will then choose to - ignore - mediate - refuse - re-instate.

What I can also state is that perm bans are/or were considered a very last resort. The usual routine is to PM to mediate/ request moderation in a moderating & reasoning way ; then progress to a warning or 3 that there would/could be a sit out ; then a sit out on the naughty step - perhaps more than once and sometimes even several times - and then a final perm ban.

Now. I am not saying at all this is what happened & I do not at all know what happened here . Nor am I obliquely suggesting any cause or reasoning from either side. I am simply placing this in the absence of anything else .

I agree, keeping the question on the main page is promoting a tacit awareness of the situation so to speak, regardless of thread drift.

Obviously no one knows what has happened "behind closed doors" - emails, PMs, etc.. But as far as any of us can see Siouxie was just given the final permanent ban hammer one day, never to return. She didn't even get a "time out." And her post history does not indicate anything untoward. So my guess is someone (or multiple) on the admin/mod team had a tussle with her and let their pride get to the best of them.

I agree BEVS when you were site lead things would have been done as you said in a fair manner. But unfortunately under the current leadership, as well as the ever changing IB guidelines and rules, things seem to be different now.

This was a better, more lively place when Sue and Paul were running the show, and when you stepped up in to their shoes. It's been on a downward spiral ever since IB bought it. Not that that really has anything to do with the members, or the site leadership.

I definitely think that ordinary, long-contributing members should have more of a say in admin/moderation decisions especially when it comes to long term members that clearly no one wanted banned. And maybe when it comes time for new site leadership/moderators, it shouldn't be just the existing mods and IB who decide it - members should be given a chance to vote via poll, kind of like a mini BE election of sorts.

Bottom line - more transparency is required from the admin and moderation team, and IB. The current state of affairs and secrecy regime of the admins and IB will not bring BE back to the community it once was, it will only drive long time contributors like us away and wither the site out of existence.

With respect it doesn't involve you so there's no reason for us to give you all the details. I'm sure the members in question would be horrified if we shared their private business on the forum.

I've been a mod under Sue, BEVS and now Bob, and nothing has changed in that time, the same would have happened under any previous admin.

‘The exact attitude’? All I said (in a roundabout way) was that it’s none of your business. If we were to spell out exactly what has gone on and give details then the members involved would be very upset with us I’m sure. We simply can’t win whatever we do but it’s not an ‘attitude’, it’s just respecting confidentiality.

We’ve never given details when members have been banned other than to those directly involved. Nothing has changed.

I understand the confidentiality of other members, but I think everyone just finds it a complete mystery, as none of her posts leading up to her ban were provocational or of insulting behaviour to other members.

Also Siouxie wasn't just some casual member, she was a huge part of this site, she was a long standing member on here for years. She was a moderator, which changed, so maybe that's where the disagreements behind the scenes could have started. Then out of nowhere, she is permanently banned......that's pretty severe in anyone's book. I'm sure she was blindsided by that as many on here are. I think that is what Gozit was getting at, it doesn't add up. I am sure we will never know, as with many other things in life.

I will say though, I think she is very much missed on here just by being so helpful to so many.

Perhaps there might have been stuff happening via private messages, which would obviously not be public to anyone, and then things get reported to the mod / admin team and then some kind of action is usually taken. There are always going to be some who think the moderation / administration of a forum is too strict / loose / whatever. Modding a forum is a thankless task, and takes a lot of time and effort, and is usually unpaid. One thing I will say, is that "Tachy Goes To Coventry" is a very nice thing to have ;) :D

Thank you for being the voice of reason. As a former Super Mod for many years, it is often a thankless task but a rewarding one as well and I was honored to have been a part of team.

As you said, as have other Super Mods and Mods on this thread, actions are determined privately between admin and member.

One person does not make or break a forum. They can enhance it or bring it down but the forum goes regardless. Continue to participate and enjoy and educate yourself here on BE.

Everyone is a voice of reason Rete. Everyone ( unless a troll or spam) . To suggest otherwise is a bit insulting to existing members that are questioning as is their right to do so . It is their community after all
I understand your leanings here however everyone is equally entitled to their voice within the Site Rules . That is BE.

So. Point of order here. There are only 2 posts by a current mod squad/ admin member & that has been by the ever succinct Oomps & subsequent to Gozits posts. That is all.
Actions - the better word is actually 'sanctions' - are not always determined as you have written. They are more as I have written. The person was banned. They did not choose to leave.

No-one has suggested this as far as I can see. One looks to the overall health of a community. as a whole. It should not be other than this. People are writing that they cannot see a reason for a long time member , and one that was considered good enough to be a mod by Sue , to have been given a perm ban without recourse. It is this that perhaps needs to be addressed in some way. What I see is that many folks did not see Siouxie as a pain in the bum regardless of whether they agreed with her or not. They cannot see trolling , agitation or a breaking of site rules. Hence the issue here.

You may remember the incursion by TIO/Lounge into the Spain forum. They trolled - and that is what they did for their own fun - and given the Site Rules should have been banned, but it would not have been for the good of the General area ( power posters) so diplomacy and mediation was the order of the day. Sometimes it just takes words. Lots of words Moderation. There is a need to be neutral.

If you're talking about Siouxie, she reads the thread and is in contact with various posters by other social media. The channel is there.

The departed poster I'd most like to hear from is ultratunner (assuming ultratunner was a discreet entity and not the creation of some jolly japester).

And that's exactly why we're not going to go in to details. Some forum members may feel 'blindsided' by this decision and not see a reason for it. Other forum members are well aware of what has gone on. The bottom line is that those who have been taken by surprise have no need to know the reasons, and we won't be sharing them publicly out of respect for everybody involved. We've never shared the reasons behind bans before, and I can't see any reason why that would change now.
