I had trouble ordering the new Tim's breakfast croissant this morning. ESL server and my unrefined pre-coffee cockney.

I think we need guidance on how to pronounce Croissant. A series of public service adverts, sponsored by Tims.

I actually really hated that. I cringed every time someone said erb and I hated the erbel essences advert. It was like someone scratching their nails down a blackboard.

The people posting on this thread must have perfect, trouble free lives allowing them to take time to comment on such a picayune matter as the pronunciation of the word herb.
Even more ironic as they all come from a country where the dropping of consonants is a national pastime.

Or we just have a sense of humour and we're not really ranting, just mildly observing something in a light hearted way.

As usual they're just copying the Americans as they do the exact same thing.

Totally agree, if I started to list life's woes, I would probably start searching for something to jump off However, I am presently choosing to get my priorities in order and am therefore just gently knashing my teeth at the Timmies ads...

I gneel before your knashing teeth, and knaw at the scab on my gnuckle where I scratched it with my gnife

Of course, if the English weren't such past masters at dropping consonants we wouldn't be able to make such fun of the process of buying 'andles for forks...

And we can make fun of it ourselves.

Then of course there's how people in Bristol add an L to many words and there's even a series of books - written by a Bristolian - making fun of the way we speak.

Most recent pronunciation dilemma (or is that a dilemna?? ) in this household is 'project(s)': long or short 'o'? & 'schedule': soft or hard 'c' ...

What can I say, we get bored easily .

.
I find if I say a word 'my' way in a meeting then Canadians all try to repeat it 'my' way, to be polite....it is very sweet.

I recently got the three people in Subway saying Tomatoes, and two cabin staff saying Clamato with a long a.

That sounds like fun .

Thought of you lot yesterday when I was trying to buy a 'croissant aux amandes'; the pronunciation of croissant wasn't the problem - the fact that it's called an 'amandine' here was.
