I'll have a butchers in the Ozzie forum now and again, some right good threads in there! There was one a while back with about a page of deleted posts! Too-ing and fro-ing about UK vs OZ, the usual guff. A thread from the Middle East also caught my eye a while back and had me in stitches. Other than that, just stick to NZ, although saying that I haven't been on much lately...

I wouldn't say many but there are certainly a few.

It's good to wander.

The ME has a serial troll . That one tends to be stomped on almost immediately by those mods specialised in that troll.

A very good question RP! I dwelt 'nervously' for a long time in the Canada section, and lurked in the Maple Leaf....but they were quite nasty on occasion if you said the wrong thing....they scared me!

Now I 'need and dwell' far too much in Canada, and sometimes pop 'home' to France. I hover around Spain, where it gets exciting...but I've never lived or posted there, and occasionally I 'visit' Africa and the Gulf because I've lived there but not posted.

Yes, Canada, for one. France occasionally, lurking, as I always think I should live there. Australia occasionally to have a natter. Spain very sparingly as it's a bit too DM. And more recently, the Rovers Return, UK. Sometimes I see an interesting thread title on the main "Discussion Forum" index page and that will take me to another region. Don't go to any other Internet forums, spend far too much time on this one as it is.

I virtually lived on here when emigrating, loitered a little in Moving Back To The UK, and despite being back in the UK for three years, still come back to Maple Leaf to see what is occurring.

Mostly here, but as you know I'm also fairly active on the France forum (which has a very different tone / culture to this one, something I am trying to subvert without seeming too obvious). I often check out Germany because I used to live there and MBTTUK these days for the same reason and also for reasons explained elsewhere.

Spain is toxic, The Lounge immensely boring and the Oz/NZ fora tedious and predictable.

I just visit Canada, the US, and once in a blue moon the take it outside (I think that is what it's called.) I ignore the rest of the site.

Does anyone have an idea of why we might have changed so much on the Canada Maple Leaf Forum? A few years ago when I joined, it was not for the uninitiated?

I don't want it to be like Spain:blink: but I do think it was more lively.... 'nicely' scary then....would any of you like to come back and beat the hell out of me in writing for my more vapid responses please:unsure:

We write less well, we have less bite, because we have been in Canada longer.

What a depressing thought:huh: I get so mad at the lack of vocabulary here, today I used the word 'potentate' in A room of 15 people and it was pointed out that nobody knew what I was on about....the daft thing is, that it was just a 'fun' conversation, but I realise that so many of us have to permanently pretend to have a limited word search.

I had to look it up, certainly not a word I have ever seen, heard or used before.

I wonder if anyone could possibly ever learn every word in the English language, I at times skim through the dictionary to read random definitions of words when bored, a few stick but most are forgotten pretty quickly, certainly some interesting words in the language.

I have found over the years this site in general (along with many I participate in) has gotten slower and less interesting. I remember at times where you could refresh the page and have quick responses and posts, now can go hours in between someone posting.

I think now that the internet is less of a novelty and more commercialized, people tend to spend less time on forums, its not unique to just this site, some I frequent went from very busy 10 years ago, to almost no activity now.

Great idea, come on down and join. We are a fairly mixed bag aren't we? Gozit probably is our youngest, but I think we've got quite a big group of followers who aren't geriatric don't we?

Out of curiosity Millie, you spent any time in any of the larger Canadian cities - Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Regina ?

Gozit got a bit of a rough ride lately; I perceive the Maple Leaf to have got 'older'. Not really for me to say as I'm not in Canada, but I used to like dropping in as it made a nice change from the US forum and was fun. I can't exactly put my finger on why it has changed.

I kept getting in trouble with the mods for pointing out the obvious about NS and then there were lots of posts about how we had to be nicer from mods, so we're nicer, and now everyone's bored. can't win.

There don't seem to be any difined bullies any more; someone obnoxious we can gang up on. There are always going to be the mild antagonists, but there isn't the same level of nutter around.

yeah but a nutter needs a feisty BEr to wind him/her up, and we don't do that so much anymore.

Yes and there is only so many ways you can tell people the same thing.

In the end it is just easier to not bother.

I know what a potentate is. My Dad used to call my sister that when she was a child... imagine what kind of adult she turned in to! (I'll give you a clue: I have no idea what she is doing these days!!)

Re: Where are all the Trolls?

OK, so having read up about how some of you go checking out other parts of the forum I went on a little excursion to France...saw you there in fact Millie! :)

But it was so weird. As I grew up there, it was so strange to read peoples' comments about their fears and excitement... if I was to move there it would be like going home!

Strange isn't it?! It's all about perception! ;)

Probably not, certainly not for the family if Patrice Vincent and Nathan Cirillo.

Whilst I knew the word potentate, I have to say I have never found the need to use it in day to day conversation but I'm going to have a good go this week! Never mind such 'unusual' words, I spotted this whilst walking the dog this morning, at the end of a race in the local Provincial park.... Words fail me. Maybe it was someone just displaying their pride in their country of origin.. Sadly I don't think so:(

I am just anticipating the traditional friendly banter between posters who have a conventional appreciation of the military / people in uniform and those with a more, er, radical point of view.

This year could go either way, although thinking about it some more, the "too soon" aspect probably means it will be a bit of a non-starter.

Respect isn't a reason to not discuss current events and the politics of remembrance day. This is getting a bit meta now - the thread hasn't even happened yet.

Yes.

There's a lot of people becoming offended these days (usually old people) over the slightest controversial viewpoint, mostly with an aim to either punish or censor those with differing opinions. That said, the commitment to free speech is one of the few things that our American cousins have got right. You can say and print things down there that sadly would get you locked up in the UK. :(
