Re: what's wrong with you lot?
I tried to explain to my Canadian boss that "paki" is an offensive term in Britain and I think he thought I was mental..... His response was "so, what should they be called?", he had a point I guess, I didn't have an answer to that...

Really infuriates me because its such a widespread term to refer to people of Indian origin IMO. Also IIRC calling an Indian a Paki is offensive for one part because they are from India not Pakistan.
Now, I can understand what your boss is saying, and referring to "them" in that manner is derogatory. How about telling him to learn who "they" are, where "they" are from and refer to "them" in the correct term.

Re: what's wrong with you lot?
I was pondering this the other day: Canada has turned me into a Luddite. At least as far as cellphones are concerned. The enormous costs of receiving and making calls, data transmission etc. means that I have no interest in having the latest smartphone here, whereas I would in the UK. This whole mobile connectivity phenomen is passing me by........

- I think that sentance is more offensive than the word Paki?

Since coming to Canada I've heard some racist things that have made my hair curl, the above being mild in comparison. Which is odd being as it's a multicultural immigrant society - I don't understand

As far as he sees it, it's the same as calling someone British a "brit" or an Australian an "aussie".... I'm not sure if he's making a distinction between someone of Pakistani or Indian origin however.
