Default What a waste ....................

Went to the dump this afternoon and on my way out the dump guy was flagging me down.

Ah sh*t thinks I, did I just dump the metal stuff in the wrong place????

Apparently not, anyhoo he says do I want a load of plants? Me being me says "how much". He says free.

"What, really??? what sort of plants?"

"Well come and have a look."

Apparently Walmart dump their overages there and it just so happened the big trailer I saw on the way in, was wally worlds heading out.

Serious amounts of perfect condition house plants, big palm things and ferns and stuff, so I loaded the truck up to the nuts with as many boxes as possible (house now looks like a jungle), called the mother and sis in law they came and took what I didn't want (or couldn't fir in the house without hubby throwing a fit).

I estimated the plants at retail value even in Walmart to be worth around $800, and there were 3 other trucks at the dump leaving with the same amount as me.

So whilst it's a good score and I actually needed them anyway (as much as you can need house plants) - what a waste for a big corporation to be able to get rid of something like that without even maybe offering it to staff or donating it to an old folks place.

With hindsight I could have driven into town and given some to one of the senior lodges - but i'm too selfish for that.

Most major retailers create a large sum of waste. When I worked retail in the US, the reason for not donating items was due to liability issues, so everything was just dumped in the trash.

We used to dump large sums of canned and boxed foods for no other reason othen then a label being damaged or a box dented, but the food still perfectly fine.

Once we destroyed and tossed out boxes of DVD's meant for another retailer and we could not sell them, had no other way to get them to other retailer, so in the trash they went.

Can just see people in cars in a stakeout at stores, ready to follow trucks to the dump.

And in some cases in this litigious society I can totally see where dumping stuff rather than some wannabe millionaire suing your ass off would be the thing you would have to do.

But these are plants (mostly of the green leaf variety without flowers I think) and unless one of them says "triffid" on the label <rushes off to check> what would the problem be there

Around 20 years ago I worked for a huge department store, on Victoria Street in London, as a stock controller..

The menswear department was clearing out a stockroom & was throwing away a ton of clothes. Amongst it all were five full length leather trench-coats.

As it was the middle of Winter I asked if I could take them to a nearby homeless shelter after work.
I was told no (company policy) and was escorted to a garbage compactor by security & told to slash the coats in half lengthways with a Stanley knife and throw them in..

All of the other clothing (around £6,000 retail value) was bundled & thrown in the garbage..

here's one that will make the girls (who wear make up) pig sick.

I managed a counter for a very trendy, expensive cosmetic house, and they had decided to change all of their displys in the stores.

Now you know the huge tester stands that hold every inch of makeup that is being sold??? well that was being binned along with all the testers.

Not only the testers from the stand but also the replacement testers that I kept under lock and key to swap out when needed (pretty much a full set of what was out on display.)

They had to throw these away because the new stand had different size inserts so the old ones wouldn't fit.

Company policy was that they obviously all get thrown and not either given away or taken by staff.

I thought screw that i'm talking to my regional manager - because what a total waste.

Managed to secure the WHOLE lot, all of it!

Single eyeshadows, duos, palettes, mascaras, liners, foundation, powders, every type of lippy and gloss you could imagine, blushers, bronzers, nail polishes and probably more i've forgotten.

I was in make-up heaven

Nope.. Every item given away is a potentialy lost sale..

and given the mark up it is often cheaper to dump (and they should get a certificate of destruction) and claim back any taxes losses etc

My wife's company sell end of line or damaged (mainly undetectable to the naked eye) products at cost or under to employees.
