Unless you're through ticketed on an airline & airport that do all of that for you. It's extremely relaxing to drop eight bags off at Gatwick, and not see them again until Kelowna, avoiding faffing about with them at YVR.

What's the general rule on lithium batteries. Isn't it just the larger 'powerbank' batteries that are banned from luggage ? I've packed laptops and never had any problems. Too many artificial rules these days.

Rules will vary by country, and I can only say for US airlines.

For the US lithium batteries that are installed in a device are generally permitted in checked luggage and permitted in carry on.

Spare lithium batteries not installed in a device are banned from checked luggage, and must be carried on and are subjected to limits.

Bags are scanned and anything banned should be caught and removed by security in theory.

Most US airlines will ask at check in if you have such items in your bag.

They do.

For zippered luggage all you need is a ball point pen to open even if locked.


In all honesty cardboard moving boxes tapped up are more secure then most luggage and are a fraction of the cost, but lack the cool factor.

Wrapping the bag up in cling film from the grocery store also works to secure the bag, but there is a risk of needing to open the bag at the airport by customs or security so it can also be a pain in the arse.

Those who think its us humans who cause damage to the bags, we are not the main cause, the biggest cause is the automate systems, they call them baggage pushers, but we call them kickers and they do a number on bags especially hard sided bags that crack.

I have never been more shocked in how every bottle, glass, and mug I've flown with has survived unscathed :/

They definitely do at the checkpoint and you will be sent back to the carrier if it's too much.
