What happens to checked bags?

Re: What happens to checked bags?
I wish I had seen what was here before it was deleted.
I can give a general description of what happens. Passenger checks it in. The bag (airport dependent as different ones do things slightly different.) then makes it way through a variety of conveyor systems where the tag is scanned and directed to where it needs to go based on airline and destination. During this ride through the system the bag will go through some security screening processes. When the bag reaches its destination in the system, a kicker kicks the bag down to a pier where it sits until a human (I think some airports have robots) puts the bag into either an ULD or a cart depending on airline and aircraft. Taken to aircraft, put on aircraft and sent on it's way. Sometimes bags get lost in the system and miss their flight. |

Thanks J, we were wondering if we didn't get on a connecting flight, and our bags were off loaded, what happens to them?

They should be returned to the baggage room/staging area until you are either booked onto a new flight and retagged, or if not travelling then sent to baggage claim to be claimed by the passenger.

Re: What happens to checked bags?
After the baggage handling staff have used a biro to undetectably open the padlocked zip and taken ownership of your Christmas Presents, it will be returned to the carousel for collection...

Coming in on international you have to clear customs and immigration. Domestic does not have these controls. |
Re: What happens to checked bags?
Does anybody have those "smart" luggage options? Not sure what features work well and would be useful.

Thats nasty and uncalled for. You do know what Jsmith does for a living.
I didn’t say it happens at YVR. But you just need to Google to find out that it does. There are even YouTube CCTV videos showing it being done. |

If you are traveling international and connecting to domestic. You would collect your bags from the international terminal and re check them in at the domestic terminal.

Except that does actually happen, so it isn’t. And I’m sure Jsmith knows it happens.

Theft does happen as more then one report of people being caught. Usually it's part of organized crime groups so tends to be more common at airports in city's with organized crime issues.
I have never seen anyone ever take anything and I certainly never would. If anything I would worry more about the security screeners who can open bags as part of their job as well as customs who can also open bags.
