It's not just the fatty in the picture. The oversized car, the coffee, the implied reliance and overuse of the car, the terrible fashion....

I do agree that the convenience and fast food generation are slowly catching up in the UK.

The average Brit is not that far removed from the average north American these days. Unhealthy diets, junk food, no exercise, beer, rising obesity, diabetes, using the car at every opportunity.

Surprisingly (perhaps) the UK has the 3rd highest obesity rate (~23%, 2003 data) after the US and Mexico while Canada's rate is ~14%, ranked 11th.

That doesn't surprise me at all as there are more chavs these days. There was a old Scottish lady on the telly who used smell peoples poo and warn them not to eat so many take aways.

I suspect that race plays a large part in those statistics. Canada has a very large East Asian population who tend to be rather more wirily-built than their European-descended compatriots.

Here are more up to date stats. The Canadian's have closed the gap somewhat over the years as have our Australian and Kiwi cousins who have been living large.

Oh dear, 2003 appears to be a long time ago. OTOH I'm pleased to report that my BMI is precisely the same now as then at 21.3 (in the recommended units of kg/square metre, which will please dbd33 no end: I expect he calculates his in troy ounces per square cubit).
