It seems like just about anything at the moment. It's not for us.

My stepson moved up to Chicoutimi last year because he figured his options were better there (he's a machinist). Several problems came up. He doesn't make much money, so could only rent. He has two dogs, which limits his rental potential. His apartment should probably be condemned. More importantly, although the people in the Saguenay are portrayed as friendly, they ain't unless you're from around there. Even within the Saguenay it depends on which bit you are from.

We went up there a couple of weeks ago, following my SIL's funeral, to suss out a few places to buy. Duplexes. Souvette would take the mortgage, because he has no chance of getting one, and he'd pay it from his income and the rental on the second half. We saw a few places. One, we all liked, until we got hold of an earlier inspection report. We ran away. Then he was informed by his boss that he was being shifted to a monthly contract. Game over for Chicoutimi (Shitcoutimi, as I call it).

Then things got going. The company he worked for in Quebec City will take back with open arms. He could start today. He needs somewhere to live, though.

We saw a place near Donacona (a bit west of Quebec). Biggish farmhouse on a huge plot. He went to see it on Saturday, along with his uncle, who lives nearby and basically built his own house, and his uncle's mate, who is a qualified electrician. That place fell at the first fence.

Attention has now moved to Beaupre, east of Quebec. We have our eyes on a duplex (a pair of semis, actually). It is obvious the place needs a new roof and windows. The uncle is going there tomorrow to cast a critical eye over it. The state of the bones is all we need to know and he will know. If it's up to snuff, we'll go up to see it on Saturday. You can't dick around in QC at this time of year. Decent properties move fast.

Cosmetic issues are not a problem. My BIL is adept and has time on his hands (recently cashiered from the army and his wife just died) and I am no stranger to DIY (there goes my summer vacation!).

That reply ended up being rather longer than I anticipated........

Army BIL eh....where was it at before pulling the plug? Sounds like you have your hands full and your SIL with 2 dogs (why I must ask) going through all this life changes and challenges.

Anyway....nice that you and souvette are trying to help him out. I guess it's part of what you signed up for :D May be this fella should join the Army too?

You probably think I'm taking the piss here, but have you considered getting yourself a girls bike?

I already have a girl's bike, she left it when she emigrated. It's no use for commuting 30 miles each way.

What interesting buildings have you seen so far?

How about one of those Subaru estate cars? They are not bad in the snow and you can throw bales of hay or pig feed in the back although you'll have to make do with a sunroof. If you really need something a bit more "hello-dolly" you could get a new Mini when they come out? Apparently they're quite good this time round.

Very sensible. The sort of thing one should have.

I think ground clearance might be an issue, Minis do look as if they'd be fun though.

My mum bought a turbo charged one and it sacred the pants off me, especially in the wet. She didn't realize she had low profile ties on it though so she took it back to the dealer after a week because she thought all the tyres looked a little flat. :)

Plus am veggie, so don't do either or your snide "analogies".

Maybe, we are touching a nerve talking about such frivolous things as new cars.. You do seem to be snipe ing at people regarding their finances/ life style .. Ex getting all your money ?
