We get the keys on Monday
After 8 weeks in temporary accommodation we finally get the keys to our new home on Monday. We are going to be busy busy busy but are looking forward to finally being reunited with all our furniture and clothes from the UK. Have had a great time buying some new furniture and obligatory 50" plasma for the family room and a 'normal' sized one for the living room. Once the home theatre system and satellite are hooked up I might not see the boys for days on end as they catch up on European footie
Can't wait to invite all our new friends round for a wee party. They have been so nice to us, even having us over for Sunday lunch where we found out that Atlantic Superstore sells Yorkshire puddings and white puddings :p . It's soooo exciting :D |

Re: We get the keys on Monday
Good news to hear you're finally at the last hurdle and getting settled into your new home.
We have been to Comet today, hubby wanted to buy an MP3 player, he was drooling all over this 42" HD plasma TV, I said "Look, just wait til we get to Canada and we actually have a room that can fit it!". (Men and their toys eh?). Karen |

Re: We get the keys on Monday
Thanks all :)
It's a beautiful day today and we have just driven back from Antigonish, a pretty town which is only 1/2 hour away. Driving through the lovely scenery, the sun was shining, the sky was blue and todays temp is +8C. On the way home I felt compelled to announce in the car "I live in Canada, pinch me cos I must be dreaming" :D |

At Christmas a lot of people in Scotland have white pudding/skirlie along with the turkey instead of sage and onion stuffing :) |

We're bringing our 42" plasma out there with us as luckily it's switchable to 110 V and 50Hz. Although relatives of ours were thinking we were going to give it to one of them. Not sure how we're going to get it working as a telly over there yet though, because it needs some sort of receiver but I dare say I will. |
Re: We get the keys on Monday
My Cousin used to be a DJ at a radio station in Cape Breton are you anywhere near there, Yes can do?
|
Re: We get the keys on Monday
We are living in New Glasgow and Cape Breton is about 4 hours drive. We are definitely going to take a trip up there sometime as its beautiful. We are also only about 15 minutes from the ferry to PEI. :D

Don't be afraid to ask for a price match, we did and got another $100 off the 42" version. Just been browsing the web for HD DVDs and found that David Attenborough's Planet Earth: Complete Collection will be release on April 24th. How fantastic will that be to watch on HD. |

We landed on 9th Jan and the house we bought was the second one we viewed although we continued to view others for a further 2 weeks. We knew it was the one for us though. We put our offer in $25,000 less than the asking price and they came back hours later asking for another $5000 so the very same day it was a done deal. You can exchange really quickly here but we allowed them just under 6 weeks to move as they have small children and they had to find temp accommodation themselves before they start building a new home on some land they own. We are in a 2-bedroomed apartment so it hasn't been too bad. It'll be great to have more space though :D
I dont want to have to impose on friends for too long, and renting will be a problem becuase of my cat :( Good luck for tomorrow and enjoy! |

Similar prices to over here then. Did you take DVD's over with you? How did you overcome the 'region' thing?
Strangely enough, some of the DVDs we hand carried play on our new Canadian XBOX 360 (The Still Game, Kath and Kim). None of the movies worked through. |

We shipped over most of our DVDs along with our region-free, dual voltage, PAL and NTSC compatible DVD player (Toshiba, only cost about 60 GBP a year ago). Will just have to change the plug. We will also be buying another player here and I have been told that some of the really cheap ones from Walmart are actually region-free even if they don't state it. I will post a new thread to see if anyone has purchased one recently. There are also websites for de-coding your player to play any dvd.

Yes-can-do,
you'll have to hop on over to western PEI, you being so close. Used to live in Antigonish, just up the road from you in NG. Great area, BTW, Cape Breton is only about 1.5 hours from you, not 4 hours. The Highlands are about 3. Cheers, Steve Clan Farquharson |

Re: We get the keys on Monday
Thanks everyone. The move went as smooth as moves can be :) . We are pretty knackered though as you can imagine.
Have to say that the removal firm was excellent on both sides of the Atlantic (White & Co in UK and Thomson the partner here in NS). We are 80% through unpacking and there is no damage. The Thomson guys here we great. We had 3 beds delivered by Sears and it was the Thomson guys who volunteered to put them together. They were here for around 3.5 hours in all and were first class. :D Got all our telecom stuff installed yestrday by Aliant (on time and helpful). Unfotunately we will have to wait til next Tuesday for TV from Bell. Phoned yesterday to inform us on the day of our installation that the HD PVRs are on back order :frown: We could have HD digibox installed but not the ones that record your programmes/rewind live TV/pause etc so I chose to wait as we loved it back in the UK. Bit annoyed though to say the least. Having a bit of a time with our garbage. Although I recycled in the UK we have to recycle nearly everything here and put them in see-through bags. Does anyone know if immigration will be tip-toeing around our bins in the next few weeks  Last but by no means least my poor calf muscles are very sore. Have to get out of bed in morning and walk like a robot until they ease up. Think its a combination of much bigger house than I am used to, wooden floors, and all the unpacking of course. Roll on the weekend............ We love our new house :D |
Re: We get the keys on Monday
Glad your move went well. Watch that recycling and enjoy your new life! :)
|
Re: We get the keys on Monday
Hurrah, great to hear you are all safely moved into your new home, and fairly on top of things.
I like the idea of having a bigger house as a form of exercise!! Congrats again and well done. |
Re: We get the keys on Monday
Bet all the sore limbs are worth it in the end:)

Re: We get the keys on Monday
Must be quite the shock considering the nasty temps we've had the past few days!
