The Vancouver biennale art display is making controversy again, not unlike the upside down church in coal harbour last time:

I,ve been enjoying many of them and I'm looking foward to the rest being installed. Any thoughts?

That's kind of what i thought. I did like the upside down church though. Some of the pieces this time around are a bit creepy. I like the one on vanier park the best. It reminds of me the movie never ending story for some reason.

Is that the set of stop signs? I must admit I like most of them (with the exception of lenin + mao with tits)

Hmm not sure about the big lump of silver foil type thing just across from the Bay on Granville... although it did make me think of the silver unicorn in Bladerunner... and Vancouver made me think about Bladerunner when we first arrived here during the the very wet winter of 2007. Crikey, art eh.

I don't think it's really about making a statement, just about generating some discussion in the area and being a focal point. If you take it from the perspective of political satire then yes it's way too overbearing, but from simply the view that it's an evocative "fun" sculpture then I think it serves it's purpose very well and keeps things light and a bit silly. You don't want something really serious as a public display.

Public art so often gets a bad rap. Just as some of the other posts have noted, it needn't be overly academic or profound - sometimes just being decorative or even if it just raises a smile means it's kind of doing it's job.
....mao with tits? - Brian Sewell must be sh!ting himself!

I remember my great nana was horrified that back in the old days, some French so-called artist put a urinal on display. I remember her saying, "call that art?"

there's a great movie from the 70's called 'that sinking feeling' where a bunch of likely lads dump a bunch of old sinks from a job site in front of an art gallery.... you can imagine the rest!
