I've not been here long enough to get used to when all the public holidays are, in fact the only one I can actually remember is Canada day. Apparently it's BC day on Monday which, as I only found out about this today, makes the coming long weekend a very pleasant surprise.
Do bank holidays here catch anyone else out like this or does everyone know when the days off are coming up?

It's the civic holiday in Ontario, Saskatchewan Day here. I tend to refer to this one as the "We're not Quebec Day" as they get St John Baptiste in June and the rest get this one.
Remembrance Day in SK is the one I always forget about.

Apparently it's John Simcoe day in Toronto. Sounds like it's fairly random across the country!

This coming wednesday we have, if we are lucky, St. John's Regatta day. It's a provincial public holiday for the St. John's rowing regatta (oldest continuously held sporting event in North America apparently...), but the rub is that the regatta only goes ahead if the weather is good. If the regatta is postponed so is the holiday. So, everyone wakes up early on Regatta day to find out whether they can roll over and go back to sleep or have to get up and go to work.
This year it's moot to me as I'll be in the Netherlands next week so will miss the holiday whichever day we have it. I'll be taking the following Monday off instead, somewhere in England.

Same here. I get the eight days I would get if I were in the UK. It's up to me to pick which ones I take. Souvette works in Ontario, so she doesn't get Quebec Day. I do but I don't bother unless she takes a day of vacation. Similarly, she gets next Monday but I don't. I'll take the day off if the weather is nice.

Here in Ottawa it's Colonel By day ( built Rideau Canal).

I do find that the start of the year through easter is a grind though with no holidays till easter.
