Still true though

Privileged they may be but if people like them don't speak out - in a form that gets noticed and heard - who does?

Katie, The Sun, Mail and Express certainly don't.

Preaching to me what I should do, how I should behave when they are as far removed from the situation as it is possible to be? No thanks, that's just virtue signalling at its worst. They actually make me angry when they speak on the subject, perhaps if they showed real compassion and put their money where their ample mouths are.

And don't get me started on Bono

No problem with Bono et al expressing their opinions. Sometimes I agree, sometimes I don't. I don't know why fame is seen as disqualification from having an opinion.

It doesn't disqualify them from having an opinion but I don't believe that people such as Bono can talk about items such as tax avoidance by large companies with any shred of credibility, when he arranges his tax liability in the way that he does.

I think it's more that some people find it uncomfortable that there might actually be an alternative view after all. You know, they like the movies someone has done, the songs they wrote/sing, the goals they scored and the way they present TV shows or whatever.

Then they hear them speak or write in an intelligent way about something, you know not calling refugees 'cockroaches'; not saying footballers with a Nigerian background are like gorillas; not being found out for making "news" up for the umpteenth time...stuff like that.

They'd rather not question the lies and poison normally fed to them, that they so willingly lap up and rather than address real issues they just wish celebs would shut up and stick to acting, songwriting, hitting the ball in the old onion bag...:(

Oh believe me I have no problem with many of the messages, but if I for instance were to lobby the government to admit say 1.2 million Syrians, I don't have to deal with any consequences because I'm well out of the way. You on the other hand are right in the thick of it, what right do I have to tell you how you should deal with and feel about the situation? If someone's not willing to lead from the front, and by example, then don't expect me to follow. As for addressing real issues, the explosions in rape, genital mutilation and grooming gangs are ONLY addressed because they were brought to light by so called racists. It's way more complex than simply left or right.

It's a matter of integrity. I took a personal decision not to vote in the Brexit referendum for this very reason. Although I could have made my vote count, the very fact that I would be influencing decisions that would affect others and not myself made me desist.

Like others, I'll throw in my two pennyworth on a site like this because I know that it's a pastime and carries little or no influence.

This doesn't mean that I wouldn't participate in a general election, it would depend on the manifesto. For example, if I saw a pig flying over bearing a streamer with the promise to unfreeze my pension then the pig gets my vote. I might even give up eating bacon.. although it would be a hard promise to keep.

Hard to say, he's an individual whereas a corporation is not (except in legal terms, I know). His contribution to good causes through donations and his personal time probably far exceeds that of the corporation (percentage of wealth terms) which affords him some credibility. He doesn't have to give a damn, most celebrities don't, but those that choose to lend their name to a cause or a be a UN goodwill ambassador are making a positive contribution IMO. And yes, U2 fan since day 0.

While I accept that you may be a U2 fan, it would appear that you are not enough of a fan to know what you are talking about. Long and short of it: he is a hypocrite and that is why he has no credibility. "Do as I say and not as I do."
