Next to the fn key on most laptops is the Alt key, hold this down as well as the fn key and then press 0163. The £ is an ASCII symbol a relic from the days of MsDos.

ok, I'm cheating I have a £ key!
but I am now wondering why I don't have a num lock on the lap top, just as Mandy is...never even looked on this keyboard before.
I haven't tried but isn't there a way of saving a short cut key, or is that only in word? I used to do it with greek symbols.
Technophobe moi.

I reset my machine to us UK English as the default language. You do this in the Control Panel. I get a £ by hitting the hash key (ie shift3). The reset also reversed the " and @.

That wasn't a tip as in "if you type GBP 123.45 it will automatically turn into a pound sign", it was just saying that I used the letters GBP instead of a pound sign.
Of course, my advice only works if you're talking about GBP 123.45. If you need to type a different amount, my advice is no good. The GBP bit will still work, of course, but you'll need to figure out your own numbers.
Hope this helps!

There's a way you can type it in too™ This might help those who can't get the Alt key method working and can remember bîzarre but short strings of seemingly random characters and numbers €
Simply type the following anywhere in your mesage (with all spaces removed):
& # 1 6 3 ;
And bingo: £
