TV, Internet and Phone

I have just seen that Bell Aliant are putting up the cost of the bundle I have to $181 per month!!!:eek::eek:

I signed up for $99 a month 3 years ago which is about to expire. I also pay $17 extra for Sportsnet world. With the price increase the bill will be about $223 a month or $2676 a year!!! HOLY SHEEP S**T batman!!!!:thumbdown::thumbdown:

I am going to get rid of it as I am not going to pay that. I will be going with Shaw satellite tv basic plus sports for $72 a month and just use the data on my phone for internet.

I was wondering what does everyone have in the way of TV, Internet and Phone???

No satellite TV (no cable here in the boonies of Ottawa), no home phone, rubbish and incredibly expensive turbo hub inter web (no DSL here either) ... and my hubby works for the CRTC

Currently streaming Shaw Internet, Telus cellphones. We ditched Shaw satellite, never used it and hated the commercials. We will soon be upgraded to high speed 250mbs here in town with Telus so will switch so will be paying $90 for the internet for all streaming andhome phone. Currently about $120 - includes home phone which we need for work
Cell phones through business and cheaper as through BC medical association so reasonable rate- Im thinking about $70 for 1Gb and good price for phones:cool:

Re: TV, Internet and Phone

About 50 for cable which is just basic plus 2 theme packs at 3 or 4 each.

60 for internet.

Those with Shaw, only viable option since Telus wants a large deposit. Not satellite but regular shaw cable.

Cell with chatr no data. 35 month which is just unlimited Canada calls and texts. No contract.

Re: TV, Internet and Phone

It sounds like you have the "better" bundle rather than the merely "good" that we have.

None of our TVs are HD so the 'better' one with HD is pointless for us. Two in our household are heavy streamers/downloaders and the 100/50 is more than good enough (and more than when we signed up too), so the 300/100 internet seems excessive.

With the tax 'good' is $23 less than 'better' and by not taking SportsnetWorld (which I see is now $20) what we do is a $46 saving.

Or it will be when the full price kicks in as we, too, signed up for the promotion. Two years left on that.

But I suppose you'd miss the HD and the Rugby League that's on SNWorld.

The way I'm looking at it is that we used to get TV from Starchoice which became ShawDirect and Phone/Internet from BellAliant.

We then halved the TV cost by cutting back some channels.

Then BellAliant had their promotion and we switched TV to them in the 'good' bundle. This immediately meant a further $$ saving as well as more than giving us the missed channels back.

When the full price kicks in after the promotion ends in two years we'll be paying much the same as before we changed from two providers but still less than originally and getting the extra channels.

I'd still like to avoid that and hopefully there will be other alternatives when the time comes, but the saving in the promotion period will have been at least $1500, so that's a cushion.

Streaming of football is much better than it was but it's still not as good and reliable as watching on telly.

If only football could be added to 'skinny' packages. But who expected skinny packages to be available a couple of years ago, so you never know.

Re: TV, Internet and Phone

I have Telus packages, 100mbps internet ($50 for 12 months) Cell phone ($100 unlimited calls etc and 1gig of data) and basic cable ($5) I mostly watch using a Raspberry Pi hence cable package on minimum, i called to cancel cable and they told me $10 for every month left on my contract, i still said cancel so they let me keep basic for $5 per month, New Priv phone so cant do much with that $100 phone bill but the $5 bundle discount i suppose means basic cable is free.
I share info with a friend so he has my Telus log in for telus WiFi hot spots and he put his Shaw info on my phone so i get Shaw hotspots for free while out and about, WiFi at work and my home WiFi means i burn very little data on my phone.
I got the 100mbps at that price because i called telus to enquire when my contract was up, knowing they would ask why i wanted to know and i expected to haggle for a while to try and get them to Match the Shaw deal for 150mbps net for $50 but they folded immediately and kicked me back up from 50 to 100mbps which was a surprise. Lots of speed and lots of data, Home Wifi runs at 50mbps too with free extended router thingy lol

Oh adding some info here, recently one of the guys i work with was belly aching about having crappy wifi at the RV park he lives on so i started trawling the net seeing what satellite deals are out there, I was surprised to find bell and another company have almost covered all of Edmonton with WiFi and almost surrounded it too. I have heard of plans in MB for something like that but didnt realise it is happening, Cant find the Bell site but found the other one. Not sure if anyone would be interested.

Indoor antenna for cable, gets about 40odd channels. No specialty ones. One-time cost of about $200 plus sweat equity to install it in the attic.

Home phone one-time setup cost of $50, no monthly fee. Can't remember the provider. Unlimited in-Canada calling. Hooks up to Google Voice, so just PAYG for US and UK calling (1c/min).

Internet, TekSavvy, $56/month, 25down, 10up, 300GB cap.

Cells, Koodo.
Mine, $30/month, 500 mins, unlimited evenings and weekends from 5pm to 8am, unlimited picture/intl text, 1GB.
Husband, $40/month, 1000mins, unlimited evenings and weekends from 5pm to 8am, unlimited picture/intl text, 2GB. (plus $7/month phone payment for 12 months)

This gets a few mentions from Ontario bods for OTA. Is that just from being close to Toronto or does it stretch as far as, say, Cobourg?

Here are the Cobourg results. I have relatives there but they are on Cogeco cable.

CBC, CTV (:thumbdown:), TVO, Global (:thumbdown:) should be available OTA. The major USA dirge channels should be available OTA from Rochester.

TV Fool

Any particular reason for Cobourg?

Wow...those are high costs but all high end specs. Any reason for needing those high specs. Why the need for 15 gb of data. We are a family of 4 and have 2.5 gb shared per month and have never gone over 2 gb in a month. Wifi is available many places.

Honestly, I'm not certain, but I'd think you may pick up enough range. We get stuff in Oakville from as far away as Rochester and Detroit. And that's a decent distance... I did a quick google to see how far the CN Tower broadcasts, but I can't find anything quickly... anyone have any insight?

Looking at a map, Cobourg should for sure pick up the Rochester broadcast at a minimum, and potentially Toronto and Buffalo as well. I'm not sure if anything broadcasts from Kingston or Syracuse.

I wish more OTA could be had out my way, but its just not a viable replacement for cable...

According the link earlier posted, we have the shot of getting 3 channels with an indoor set top, and maybe 2 more with an attic mounted antenna but that isn't a feasible option in an apartment where there is no attic...

No major networks just a few independents and PBS.

That was the best thing about living in that region of ON for me when I did, easy to get around with the train services, something we lack out west, no car and don't live in the translink zone, car is the only option.

Yes the better bundle at $99 for 3 years was the best at the time as it included whole home HD PVR - 4 tvs in the house.

Def would miss the RL  They also show a decent amount of Union and Footy as well

I am looking at Shaw sattelite skinny plus all tsn, sportnet and sportsnet world for $57 a month which in all honesty would suit me fine, however boss lady may insist :p on adding 5 channels for an extra $15 a month as some are a two for one add ons.

I looked at just having Fibre OP internet and streaming but at $85 a month it seems a bit steep.

I have Koodo mobile with 4gb of data a month. I dont really stream or download much so I think this would cover just web browsing for a month.

Assuming they could be picked up, we face the wrong direction for a direct signal, so no idea if we could actually pick anything up.

Re: TV, Internet and Phone

For internet, cell phones, cable TV/Sat, why do folks get into these 2 or 3 year contract - is it really would being locked in?

My Bell (fibre to the home) on a 12 month 'price term' (no contract) cost $39.99/mth (discounted from $69.99/mth). Its 300 gb/mth usage, speed is 25 mbps down/25 mbps up, as seen using the ookla speed test.

Very soon it'll be time to call Bell (which is a pain the the rear) to try to renegotiate another deal

Why is it that folks in Canada have to get their agro wound up spending a lot of time with ISP or cable/sat providers negotiating to basically get a deal?

This time round, should Bell not come through with a continuation deal at the current price, I have decided 'all the ISP providers can screw off'. Any internet browsing that I need, I'll do at the local library when I'm passing it, for one hour or so every other day.

The internet is addictive, yet, being retired, do I really need to be on it as much as I do!

I just wont be bullied into paying for something that is way too much for what it is. Switching ISP providers also cost money, time & frustration.

We aren't subscribed to a term or contract at all. I can cancel our Internet, TV, or Home Phone as I see fit. The only thing on a contract are our 3 smartphones and those are tied to 2 years from the day we bought each phone, and I can get out of it by paying the remainder of the balance of the phone that isn't yet paid off through the contract. My brothers line is BYOD/contract free as he just gets hand me downs from me and my mum. All of the cellphones are also unlocked so we can use them with local providers when we travel.

We got burned here in Malta with ISP changes. ISP 1 raised my Nanu's internet by 5 Euro per month without asking him, so he cancelled and moved everything to ISP 2, signed a 2 year commitment and everything. Now, ISP 2's internet sucks, it drops off at night time, and on top of it after the 3 months they want him to pay 6 Euros more per month for faster speed. So in the end he isn't ahead and if he wants to go back to superior ISP 1 internet he has to pay a 150 EUR cancellation fee.

In Canada and here, when its anything that doesn't give me a device (cell phone) at discount in exchange for the 2 year commitment, I won't sign it. I just take the "no contract" price even if it is 10 Eur more per month. And in Canada when I negotiate I always ensure its a no contract basis. This whole debacle affirmed that belief.

Top tip - I'd highly recommend that you upgrade your router or WAP to 802.11ac and set up both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, then move as much of your wireless traffic to the 5GHz side as possible. You'll have less noise, less interference, better speeds, a more stable connection, and possibly even better battery life.

I am hard wired for my two desktop computers but virtually all my wireless devices are connecting on the 5GHZ network.

I did a speed test on my iphone on 2.4 channel, consistently getting speeds of 40-60 mb/s, on the 5 channel I am now getting 150+ all the time.

I don't think it is sponsored by Shaw, it just shows Shaw as the ISP.

Yes, I am thinking of doing this with Telus so it would cost us $240 to cancel. But you get to the point where you are so fed up with the charges creeping up and up every month. When I was with Shaw, we never went over our "generous" 250 GB internet allowance or even anywhere near that limit. Since changing to Telus, we seem to be doing it all the time and there's one less person of us here on a daily basis ... so we have to pay an extra $10 pm for unlimited.

I am always wary of companies who require contracts to get a reasonable price, if their service is good, why the contract?

I've always had Shaw except a small period with Telus, and generally happy, although we have tried the can we get a better price or we will cancel a few too many times as now they are more then willing to cancel and don't attempt to offer anything better, so we are stuck since Telus is a no go.

I've always had Shaw except a small period with Telus, and generally happy, although we have tried the can we get a better price or we will cancel a few too many times as now they are more then willing to cancel and don't attempt to offer anything better, so we are stuck since Telus is a no go.

Yep, agree... Like I said we got burned on this in Malta. 24 month contract and the service is crap... Have one of their techs coming on Monday to see but i'm not so sure.
