When I was with Shaw, we never went over our "generous" 250 GB internet allowance or even anywhere near that limit. Since changing to Telus, we seem to be doing it all the time and there's one less person of us here on a daily basis ... so we have to pay an extra $10 pm for unlimited.

Well try it and give them the opportunity to reduce the cost as they did with me, When they say how much it costs to cancel just say OK as you dont use it and not worth keeping it ! also quote Shaws new offer of 150gbps for $50 too and theyll match it, you get a lot of data with that too, i stream everything through a raspberry pi and i dont even get close to my data limit and most of its HD as well as two phones connected to it when im home, a tablet and a desktop, PS3, Nest.
Well worth a try looking at how much your paying.
Ive just seen theyre offering Fibre internet now, been expecting it for a while so likely prices will begin to fall on their other deals. I looked and 100mbps has 500gb of data and as i said its fixed at $50 per month for 12 months to match Shaw.

Yes, thank you for the tips. I will try these strategies with Telus. Probably I will wait till we reach the one year point (November). You now how you always have to psych yourself up to make this kind of phone call.

Just signed up for Techsavvy, they install next month. I like the no-contract flexibility because I've no real feel for where my data usage will be. We had 200Gb with Rogers and hit the 75% warning with reasonable frequency; but I suspect that's the kids.

Since the ex moved out with the Rogers package I've been managing on my smartphone hotspot...

So I can drop my monthly bandwidth and speed if I find I've oversubscribed.

Yeah we liked that with TekSavvy as well. We have the 300GB package. I think twice we have hit the 50% warning, lol. And we stream a LOT (Netflix, iPlayer, etc), plus some other downloading. So we have been happy with it.

Did you buy the modem outright?

Re: TV, Internet and Phone

We have unlimited but only ever use 250gbs per month so would probably be fine on a 300gb package as well. But its nice to have the peace of mind for downloading, when friends are over, if I need to download lots of software for a client etc so we keep it. Same with the mobile data we don't need all of the data we have 80% of the time but the 20% of the time that we do it is really good to have.

At least it's unlimited from 2am to 8am... so we've just said that if we are getting close to the limit regularly we'll set as much automated stuff as we can to just download in that time... but it hasn't been a problem! :)

Yes I did. I reckon I'll be well under 100Gig to start off with.

So... dumb question... what do I need to stream a movie to the TV? (And since I'm buying a TV soon si there anything I need to look for).

I know you can do it via an xbox/ wii/ etc but I'm not sure I'll be investing in a games controller now.

If you want to cast "legit" content (e.g., Netflix in Canada with no funkiness), then get a Chromecast. Cheap, simple, your phone works as a remote.

If you want to cast geo-restricted content (e.g., iPlayer) then honestly just hook up a laptop to the TV. (I had Chromecast working for awhile with iPlayer and other Netflix regions but it's getting more and more difficult to find the workarounds.)

Edit: We also have a desktop hooked up to the TV. It wasn't an expensive unit. It does our downloading, and it means that playing stuff is way easier than trying to cast since you can just use the TV as a really big monitor. It's easy and simple, we have a wireless keyboard with a built-in mouse. My parents have the same setup.

This is one that it really depends what you want to watch on the TV. Normal Netflix? Geo-restricted content? Downloaded content? etc etc...

Re: TV, Internet and Phone

I really can't understand this. I am seeing from all your posts that 250GB is quite a reasonable figure. This is what we had with Shaw, four of us with two teenagers. Then we moved and switched over to Telus and lost a teenager (to University). We also started to exceed the 250GB regularly. The remaining teenager does stream a lot on her phone but she says no more than she used to when we were with Shaw. So I ended up paying an extra $10 for unlimited from when we had a temporary lodger staying in the suite downstairs even though we were exceeding it before the lodger came.

Grrr Telus!

Sorry, rant over!

Lots of USB connections and a few HDMI too so you can connect lots to it.
My sound bar needed a light connection which fortunately my TV had lol

I don't know~! I'll have a TV for the kids, at the moment all I watch is old UK comedy clips on Youtube- Mitchel & Webb is the current favorite. But then I do that on the tablet in bed, watching something on a TV in a living room is not something I've ever really done.

Is chromecast an android thing?

Maybe I should ask the little wheels... I'm sounding incredibly technodumb here...

Are you in a built up area? do you change your WiFi password regularly ?
Last year i found out someone had managed to connect to my wifi and i was getting close to my data limit.
One mistake i made was not shutting off playback properly on streaming so it was still streaming even when i wasnt there lol

Snowy - you should be able to check on your router what devices are accessing your internet. Changing the password works too, though, lol.

Pizza - yes, Android thing but works from iOS as well. If they want to watch netflix, youtube, whatever without any geo-restricted stuff then it's super easy.

Yeah the little wheels are fully appled up.

With whatsapp dissappearing off blackberry at Christmas I have a real dilemma. I`m locked into a contract at work until 2018 and I don`t want to upgrade there (hence extending the contract) as I want to drop that number and bring my personal number in.

My personal cellphone is also a blackberry (keyboard type which I prefer) but it`s on its last legs. Looks like I need to buy something to get me through to 2018 when I can merge down to one phone.

If you want a physical keyboard, then get the Blackberry that has the physical keyboard that runs Android.

PRIV - New BlackBerry Android Secure Smartphone - Canada

Wheels could easily use a Chromecast from their Apple devices. You'd open the video app (say, Netflix) and you'll get an additional icon that allows you to cast the video to the TV. https://www.google.com/intl/en_ca/ch.../tv/#?discover

I checked mine and wasnt sure so i switched off everything in my place that connected to my wifi and still had one connected.
Funny a few weeks after that at a condo meeting someone commented they asked a guy why he was sat on our back steps and he said he was connected to wifi in the building, may have been him who figured out the standard telus password. Its a complicated one now lol

The newest of our three TVs was bought in 2005. None of them are HD and none has HDMI input so to put anything from computer to TV we just use a thumbdrive.

We do that through the PS3 (not all file formats though) although I believe some do it through a DVD player, it's just that ours is too basic for that. :o

On the other hand, when did we last play a DVD?

Netflix also comes through the PS3 but it's also a channel in our BellAliant Fibe TV package that needs the usual sign in, so it's available via laptop, TV and PS3/TV

Actually that's a good idea. I never thought of that. If you don't mind the space used up it does save re-positioning/reconnecting a laptop.

If you don't still have your old Desktop you could probably pick up something good enough cheap. And it could even be part of your back-up plan

Yeah I know, I need a Priv, I used to love the slideout keyboard on my Nokia E75. The price is putting me off though; it's not available on Koodo. I'm kind of waiting for the new fixed keyboard blackberry due early next year.

I've read that the Priv is extremely sensitive to the version of android its running; on Lollipop it's not good and has battery overheating issues. On Marshmallow it's fine. And Android has just launched Nougat... coming to Nexus phones first, of course.

I am pretty fed up with Bell. Last month I paid $255 including several movie channels, home phone and unlimited internet and tax. Still far too much. Was getting a good deal with Rogers after being with them for some years but got fed up with their Navigatr guide and closed my account. I too started at a lower rate with Bell but it has edged up over the months.
Phone is still with Rogers and that's $100 a month with 3GB.

WTF that is a ripoff.

I just checked Koodo's site. For $40/month if you have your own phone:
$40 / Month
500 MB of Shock-Freeâ„¢ data 1
500 Canada-wide anytime minutes
Unlimited messaging (text & picture) 2
Unlimited evenings and weekends (5pm) 3
Call Display, Voicemail, Call Waiting, Conference Calling and Unlimited Canada-wide Family Calling 6
Additional data $5/100 MB

Re: TV, Internet and Phone

If you live in the correct areas and don't leave the area often and don't care about zones, chatr has 40/month with 1gb data, unlimited in zone calling Canada wide + US, unlimited texting incl international. But it's only available in certain regions.

Greater Toronto Area, South Western Ontario, Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton, and Calgary.

We have them but no data, but of the prepaid which we need they seem to have the best options, just are not in a zone for the data plan.

Re: TV, Internet and Phone

after being with Rogers cell for over 10 years, I dumped them after being gouged & listening to what our kids had with Koodo, Fido & virgin - I spent a long time before going with Public Mobile

They are owned by Telus (Bell), in December 2014 I went with then for a province wide unlimited talk plan only (no contract +no roaming charges) includes voice mail & call display (no cost SIM no cost 911) for $19.95/mth + tax = $21.47. I'm still on this basic plan today

It also allows me to call when I'm in my province to Canada wide without extra cost

All incoming calls are also free

OK, so in 2015 they up'd the cost a bit, beef'd up their service. Its all on line, there is no store

Available in NB, no contract, 24/7 province wide calling, 1 GB data, Global text, comes in at $42/mth

https://publicmobile.ca/en/on/plans

https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/on/coverage

.

Pizzawheel Aug 26th 2016 4:54 am

Re: TV, Internet and Phone

I did get a new phone with that contract but that's long paid off with their TAB. And since they don't have any phone I want, looks like I need to re-think!

I'm happy with wifi only data though; I have 6Gb of data on my work phone.

UPDATE: OK I checked it. I can go down to the $30/ month plan but not the $25; my free UK calls add-on needs canada-wide minute availability. I guess having that little bit of data would be handy in emergencies so it'll save me $5 a month.

UPDATE 2: My current plan is $29. I'm paying $55pm total with the $20 UK call add-on, obvs I forgot taxes. So no point spending $1 for a teaser of data! But thanks for the thought!

with a 2 year contract + pay for modem rental, $49.90 year 1, $79.90 year 2

The key is 'getting a no term contract package deal' fixed price, modem included, cancel anytime, which is what Bell is offering me, but I am barking on the price of $53.95/mth + tax

https://www.start.ca/services/highspeed#package-0

15Mbps internet $40/mo no contract, using Bell's lines so no degradation in quality... (I wouldnt go with the cable, i'd go DSL, as cable is Rogers lines which are very congested in my experience in Toronto) For someone like you you don't need 25Mbps, 15 will do just fine.

EDIT: You can buy your own modem for $40 from them and get a decent wireless router on top if you need wireless and thats the modem sorted.
