Glad I never bought a ticket...No harm to the guy, and his recent treatment may well be a contributory factor, but it was disappointing...no singing at all, more like shouting. Much prefer studio recorded versions of all songs sung, which I have most of. Remember watching a video a while back of a live recording of the Hip at Bobcaygon...equally disappointing so it's not as if the opinion I express above is a new one. Like a lot of bands, I am afraid the Hip can't carry a show live. Just an opinion.

I put the bedside radio on expecting the usual Saturday night blues show (not looking for blues, just something in the background to fall asleep to) and there it was, obviously live music but a mix of growling and shouting.

Lol, I seen a few of his live shows on YT and it takes a few shows to get what he does live. Really it's more a visual of him communicating with the crowd. Once you take away the visual you lose the concept, and yeh then he sounds not so good
Personally I enjoyed it. I can see the band continue with a new singer who actually might be better for the live gigs

Well I don't have much clue about how he sounds, or sounded, but I think you're missing the point about the tour.

Not at all, I made reference to Gord's condition in my post. My post was specifically in reference to the quality of the performance. I 'get it' re the significance of the event, however have tried to deal with the quality of the event from a purely musical perspective in my post. Sorry if that was not clear and was in no way designed to detract from the events significance.

Any songs to recommend ? I've never quite understood the appeal of this band.

Always loved the studio stuff even when I was living across the pond. First time I worked with them I gave a huge thumbs down, and have done ever since. I've never understood the contrast between the two. I'm told by a lot of people that I just don't get it, and maybe I don't. Anyway I watched the concert, from a fishing boat in the middle of a lake, on a big screen which someone had quite kindly placed outside their cottage. The entire show was quite awful IMHO, but I did catch a 3lb pickerel which I will be enjoying at some point this week.
Glad to see the back of the hype.

The Tragically Hip seem to me to have been a sort of equivalent to Billy Bragg; they had two good songs long ago but really weren't great even then and have been going downhill ever since. Nonetheless, listening to them, or him, is an article of faith among those of a particular way of thinking; parochial Canadians and champagne socialists respectively.
I like Billy Bragg but wouldn't expect anyone of another age or from another place to be able to put up with his noise.

I dunno about "good" but, at least, it has Bobcaygeon spelled correctly.
