The Toon Army / EPL thread

There was another interesting point mentioned in the match preview, regarding Hull's form:-
5. Already been beaten home and away by Aston Villa, Wigan and Sunderland; Manchester United could also do the double over them.
Not that I'm suggesting Phil Brown would throw the match to save his home club but it's definitely putting a red (and white) flag on the matter.

Anyway, if the Toon don't get a result, it's all academic. They can't afford to be looking at the other matches.

That is the silver lining. I just hope they don't assume they will bounce straight back up again. Championship football is different, and you need a different style and different players to make it work.

If that's sarcasm, it's misplaced. No sense of entitlement at all, just loyalty to the local team and an appreciation of attractive football and of blood, sweat and (appropriately enough) tears.

Not really sarcasm, but after spending a few years in the region I did see evidence of this entitlement thing, however I meant it more in a relative way to the neighbours, rather than an absolute generalisation.
Sunderland fans often came across as humble and passionate, they also lived up to the criteria of "loyalty to the local team and an appreciation of attractive football and of blood, sweat and (appropriately enough) tears" and struck me as a hopeful bunch. Newcastle fans would often be of the opinion that they had a first class 1st division team, they regarded Sunderland (fans, team) as a bunch of subhumans.
Middlesbrough would never be talked about. Apart from when either set of fans would joke about the monkey-hanging (which I think was a misplaced reference to Hartlepool but I always trusted my judgement not to argue about it).
