If you search around on the forum there are some interesting posts from Scilly about the times they spent in that cabin. There was a thread on living off the grid (not sure if that was the title but it was the topic) that has some good ones.
Yes, it was interesting for townies, although ones who had loved tent camping, preferably never on commercial sites, so were used to cooking on camp stoves, and such arcane things. |

Last week I found myself saying the words 'I hope it was a rat'. Not a phrase I ever imagined myself saying in any of my 40 years in the UK. What sentences have you said during your Canadian lives that you couldn't have imagined uttering in the UK?
"Allright Nancy, I will look after your collection of guns while you are are on vacation in case your daughter pawns them for gambling cash. But I don't know anything about guns, so please make sure all the ammunition is removed before you hand the bag over." |

“we need to rake the roof this morningâ€
(and probably any other utterance subsequent to even an ‘average’ snow drop) for reasons…… …never imagined I would move to a snowy cold place having spent my adulthood, in the UK, steadily making my way from the Midlands further and further into the South West so as to be in the warmest bit of the island because I don’t like the cold or ice. …never imagined I would buy a house that is so rubbish that we have to make sure there is minimal snow collection on the roof throughout the winter, because otherwise it will be dripping into the house in the Spring, or might actually finally break the roof. (And then the minimal pitch of our roof is so ridiculous for a building in a climate like this) …never imagined I would end up in a place where I’d find getting help with such things as snow clearing and house fixing too hard. |

My MIL is in the hearing aid boat. Not phrases for me, but until I arrived in BC I had never heard the work Toque or Parkade, so I imagine I have used those 2 in phrases at some point. In California we say beanie and parking garage. Oh and runners, in California we say tennis shoes or sneakers but most say tennis shoes even though they are not actual shoes for tennis, but its just what is said... |

"If you can't Dodge it, Ram it" :D
"I'll just go and shovel the snow off the sidewalk" "It's only a 2 hour drive away, not far at all!" :D |
