So can't you just nuke the rats or mink? ;)
Being registered farmers does give us access to stronger rodenticides than the average person can get hold of but I use them sparingly as I don't want to poison all the surrounding wildlife |

Nuclear research. Realtor. Duck keeper (?) Farming.
There could be a life changing thread. My pen-pushing to landlord doesn't seem so big a change now. What next?

Last week I found myself saying the words 'I hope it was a rat'. Not a phrase I ever imagined myself saying in any of my 40 years in the UK. What sentences have you said during your Canadian lives that you couldn't have imagined uttering in the UK?

I assume that whatever it was will revisit at some point - hence the hope that it was a rat.
Sorry to hear about your ducks, hope they are recovering from the attack.. |

"Yes, let's do buy a cabin in the wilderness"
No neighbours for about 20 km 100 km from a "big" town with services ............. less than 5,000 people. 60 km from the nearest telephone No services to the land, including no cell phone (only satellite phone possible, some times) Cabin in serious deteriorated state, with a 12' x 12' pack rat nest in the "attic". We had fun for 14 years, but never managed to achieve building the new cabin on that better site. We did get water brought up from the stream to a tank in the cabin so we had a flush toilet indoors .......... thank heavens for generators!! The other option was to bring water in buckets from the stream and pour water in to the toilet to flush it. Desperate for a shower??? Either go and lie in the stream with tiny fish nibbling your toes, boil water and have a stand-up top to bottom wash in the bathroom, or drive 60 km to the laundromat with 2 showers, cost $2 per shower, 10 minutes maximum. Let one of the machines wash the sheets and clothes while you get clean. Get a free hair colour by washing your hair with the iron-rich stream water. I'd have run away screaming once upon a time!!! |

Thanks Siouxie and Bevs. The two 'hospitalized' ducks are doing ok so far, they are eating and drinking which I am taking as a good sign and seem fairly calm (which may not be). The main group are definitely more nervous than they were before. I went out to feed them yesterday evening and they got themselves into a panic, with two running out of the shed into the pen. One of them came straight back in but the other one stayed out. When I went to retrieve her she decided to take off, they are Indian Runner ducks, they don't really fly but they can manage to get airborne and fly a few feet. Unfortunately the few feet took her over the fence and into the forest, I think she was even more surprised than I was, by this time the light is fading, and I am trying to find a small white duck in the snow. I found her footprints which led me to the duck and I could herd her gently back into the pen so all present and correct again.
I attached a photo of some of them enjoying a nice afternoon in the sun last Summer. |

We met a lot of very friendly people, learnt a lot about previous use and owners of our 20 acres, and tried to save an old trapper's cabin that was hidden in a wooded area ......... apparently it was one in a chain of about 20 that had been worked by an old guy in the 40s and 50s. We never did find the "commune" that was supposedly about 10 miles away. Saw lots of deer, a bear at least once on every trip, marks of moose and elk, and loads of other interesting wild life. |
