Things you bring back from the UK when on holiday?

I was making a list tonight of the things I try and bring back because I usually forget something. I try not bring back anything that's too heavy. I was curious about the things other people bring back with them, things they think are essential and then the one offs.

This is not an absolutely immutable, definitive and exciting list, just my usual haul.

Gravy granules
Farley's Rusks
Pot Noodles (Bombay Bad Boy flavour)
Paracetamol & Codeine effervescent tablets
Lemsip
Bonjela
Colman's English mustard in a jar.
Monster Munch crisps
Twiglets
Jelly Babies
Cadbury Smash
A couple of pouches Old Holborn
Lots of newspapers
A new Spurs football shirt

Given what I have heard about cheese, I might want to bring that back. Are you allowed to do that?

Dear god, is there a little Oink then?
Lemsip = Neocitron. Add whiskey/brandy to it and it's more effective and tastes OK.;)

Right Guard roll-ons.

Can you get 'proper' jam over there?

Re: Things you bring back from the UK when on holiday?

Chocolate! I returned from the UK last night and in my bag I have: two 400g bars of Dairy Milk, a tub of M&S chocolate cornflake bars, M&S walnut whips and I did have a bag of Minstrels but they seem to have accidentally fallen into my stomach already. I also brought back Candy King pick'n'mix gummy strawberries and foam bananas to which I'm rather partial.

Sadly I had my two precious tins of Heinz Beanz confiscated by customs at Gatwick, as I'd somehow accidentally packed them in my carry on and they constitute 'liquid'. I promptly burst into tears as he took them (it had been a rather stressful day for other reasons I feel I should point out...) I live out in the sticks so I have a 2 hour drive to the nearest place I know of that sells them here. Boo! Fortunately my sister and her boyfriend are coming out for Christmas and I've asked that they bring one suitcase of clothes and one full of beans. ;)

I also picked up a fair few packets of paracetamol at 16p a pop, rather than pay the silly price they are here, and a big bag of Twiglets, which I plan to hide from my boyfriend and his family, since they spend all their time complaining about how disgusting they are but when I turn my back I find they've scoffed them all!

Well back to reality now - but I'll still be dreaming about how lovely it would be if Ocado delivered this far...

Marmite
A cold (usually)
Quirky and normally expensive bling from the Brighton Lanes
Duty free B&H
A nasty Visa bill

I used to support them when I was at school. Going back to the Garth Crookes day. Giving my age away there.

Cheddar, brie, Camembert, Stilton....??
They are all OK to take back to Canada?
Right then, OH has a huge fridge freezer in his rented and when he next comes back for a visit, I know what he will be doing - taking back a suitcase of cheese to freeze!
And some beans!

Re: Things you bring back from the UK when on holiday?

My OH is off to London next week on business so he will be bringing me back:

Boxes of Crunchy Nut and Crunchy Nut Nutty Cornflakes
PG Tips Pyramids
Packets of choccy bars i.e Caramels, Penguins, etc
Galaxy bars
Crisps - all flavours
I'm sure I'll think of more before he leaves on Sunday :)

I would love sausages, bacon, cheeses, Anchor butter, prawn crackers, and plenty more but unfortunately these are things you are not allowed :(

The gravy granules will get you in the shit. My mum declared hers coming into Halifax last year, and they were confiscated - meat product. She is probably now on the no-fly list ;)

If you don't declare, the beagle will probably get you

Ah yes, when I arrived back last November I had Bisto Best gravy granules and Oxo cubes confiscated (I did volunteer that I had them though, so no rapped knuckles or fines!) Fortunately for me, my dad was not so honest when he came to visit and managed to sneak some through for me...;)

not brie or camembert- it has to be hard cheese. cheddar, stilton etc is ok. There is a limit, I cant remember how much (probably about a kg)

also, you have to declare it on your customs form. The official at the desk will ask you what you have - just tell them. As long as they recognize it as hard cheese, you'll be waved through. I always bring back cheese and declared it and it has never caused problems

From the last trip to the UK we brought yids ticket stubs. If only once in this lifetime I could see them win...

<Ponders why an earth one would want to bring gravy granules anywhere>...

A local independent supermarket here in NL has recently started stocking a small range of British goods. That includes several different shades of gravy granules. If the demand is there I could start supplying these by mail order from within Canada. At 150% mark up of course.;)

Gin (duty free)

That is all.

but I did once buy a Liverpool shirt at Gatwick as a souvenir too, out of boredom as much as anything.

Airport shopping is a dangerous thing. I bought a Guinness tshirt once. In my defence, my luggage was awol and I had nothing else to wear. But it is still in my closet, like a guilty secret.

Edited to add: I'd bring back Cadbury Buttons. Giant ones. And a suitcase full of Primark clothes.

The ingredients in the standard bisto gravy granules are

Potato Starch
Maltodextrin
Vegetable oil
Salt
Colour
Flavourings like celery, soya, wheat
Wheatflour
Flavour enhancers
Emulsifier
Spices and herb extract
Onion extract

Plus, in over 30 odd trips back to the UK I've never been searched, less had anything confiscated.

Things we brought back on our recent trip back:

Clothes. Both for myself, the Mrs and the toddler.
Shoes. Ditto.
Colemans Sausage Casserole mix.
Chocolate. (Obviously)
Wilkins Tiptree Marmalade.
Books.

that's about it. After 6 years we've learned to live with the local alternatives or have found sources for the things we miss. Of all the things we buy in the UK, cheaper, decent footwear seems to be the biggest thing.

I saw the original many years ago. I'll have to search this one out. It has mixed reviews, but definitely looks worth watching.

Have to agree with you on shoes (work shoes). Even the expensive ones are crap. I treat my last remaining pair of Church shoes like relics.

Things I have previously brought back include:

Minstrels
Bisto low salt gravy granules
Malt loaf
Jaffa Cakes
Calpol
Cymalon
Bras
"Simple" moisturising face wash

I think I am finally, after three years, learning to do without (not the bras though, I did buy local instead of M&S) ;)

i dont understand gravy granuels galaxy chococlate or marmite as they are ready available here?..and the english version too.

ann m Sep 9th 2010 6:43 am

Re: Things you bring back from the UK when on holiday?

Most of the things we bring back are readily available.

But none of us like paying twice the price for them, so we rack up our visa bills and fill our suitcases full of them and think we've got a bargain.

I mean, if I was that desperate for Minstrels I would go and buy some - but then sometimes they taste bitter 'cos I've just forked out a fortune for a few silly choccies. But if I bring a huge family bag back from the UK which cost me 2 pounds, they taste wonderful :D

Oh yes, forgot about the bras. The Mrs was very pleased to have purchased six bras for 150 quid. Apparently they would have cost hundreds of CAD$. A well fitting bra makes for a happy wife which is all good for me.

Nothing English is readily available where I live (other than Marmite, which I don't bring back for that reason). And the only gravy granules I've seen in import shops (2 hours drive away from me) are the Bisto ones, NOT the Bisto Best which are, well, the best. Obviously.:p

Flippin heck - how on earth did you get those back in one piece? I can only assume in your hand luggage, as our luggage has been totally shredded between Manchester and Vancouver every time. I put a photo frame in my OHs case this time - right in the middle, surrounded by clothes to cushion any blows and it still came out with the glass broken.
