I think I'll leave the cheese on toast in that case.
Surely, if you can afford cheese, the cost of a new cooker is trivial.

Yep, the oven comes on as well. It's odd. The flame on mine only covers a small area too and you have to have the door open while the broiler is on. And
no grill pan either.

Can't be the case of a broken element - my cooker is gas!
In our rental we had electric and even then the broiler grill thing was rubbish, as it still cooked from the bottom as well.

The other issue is that the top oven shelf bracket is not anywhere near close enough to the top of the oven to make grilling effective.

Yes, I went looking or a grill pan when i first got here and realised something was up when I couldn't find one anywhere.

The ridgy pan is doing fine for now for meat and stuff as it at least lets any fat drain away from the food (which, considering the bacon situation, is essential).

I had already decided to spend the fortnight I will be in the UK for my niece's wedding next year eating cheese for every meal, so now some of that will be on toast.
I feel like Ben Gunn.

We do cheese on toast regularly under the broiler in our electric oven.

Maybe it is just the gas, then.
However, I will keep it because I love a gas oven for roasting and baking.

Maybe if I ever renovate our kitchen, I will have a separate gas oven and hob and and electric grill above, just for cheese on toast.

There are some nice President Choice mini sausage rolls on sale at the moment which could make an expat's experience at Canadian Thanksgiving just a little more tolerable.

My OH has got one at work, it seems.

I will go there to make cheese on toast from now on.

I've thawed 2 of my Italian sausages out in the microwave and thrown them in the pan to pre-cook, whipped up some pastry (like riding a bike, you never forget), and I'm going to have sausage rolls. The peer pressure is incredible around here! Is anyone drinking? I may have one. I'm a social drinker; if someone says they're having a drink, I say, "So shall I!"

OK, I'll have one with you, just to be sociable.
Mine's a large one - no ice.

I might even try a sausage roll when they are ready.

Cheers, I've just popped a can of beer, (clink). I'll let the sausages cool in the fridge, (where the pastry is cooling), then roll, wrap and bake in the oven. Should be ready in about 40 min.

Might get cold on the walk home. Better to make him bring the oven with him

I have a Pride in hand, a tray of turnips and a chicken in the oven, bowls of potatoes and carrots ready to go in and peas (not real peas, frozen GM ones, real peas are elusive in Canada) on the stove top. Already today I made a jambalaya and enough bean salad to feed an army. A bowl of dough that will become braided challah is to my right, one to be turned into baguettes is to my left. Who says you can't cook in a Kenmore oven?
