We are about to celebrate our first Thanksgiving in Canada. I've bought the turkey and pumpkin pie, but what else goes with it? I'd like it to be a traditional Canadian Thanksgiving rather than a British Christmas dinner in October. Do we eat roast potatoes and sprouts??

My kids assure me that it's traditional to give presents at Thanksgiving, but I didn't believe them!

In Canada we celebrate the harvest, so the more food and family/friends to share it with... the better! I think of Brussel Sprouts, Mashed Potatoes with gravy, red cabbage, fresh rolls, etc. as heading down the traditional path, but I know friends who have ham and scalloped potatoes instead! I'm fine with either actually

I haven't attended a Canadian family thanksgiving but for xmas dinner last year we had roast turkey/mashed spuds/sprouts/carrots and salad.

Talking to someone on the blower today, roast snips and sweet potatoes (roasted like parsnips)are traditional too. After seeing the price of Turkey and the fact there are only 3 of us I'm roasting bison for thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving (don't trust the kids on gifts - no one I know has been worrying about what to get peeps for thanksgiving )

You bought a pumpkin pie! Tsk! At the very least... get a premade pie crust and tin of Libby's pumpkin mush and follow the recipe on the back!

Happy thanksgiving and no I have never heard of giving gifts at thanksgiving....! I think the kids are trying to pull a fast one on you!

We nearly weren't going to have Turkey, as Safeway only have fozen, and they take like 3 days to defrost!!

Found a nice fresh one in Co-op though, and I have recipes for gluten-free gravy and stuffing!

NEXT year I MIGHT make a pumpkin pie!!!

Thanks everyone, I just want our first Thanksgiving to set the scene for the years to come, and be Canadian! We are very lucky as we have all 3 kids with us (eldest 2 kids- 20 and 17 years, went through various stage of not wanting to come) so they will be helping to set traditions for their future families.

Things are looking good so far, we've been here 2 months, have a nice house, 2 youngest are settled in school, eldest is working full time but hubby still looking for a job!

By the way, what do you eat pumpkin pie with?!

PLEASE dont do the gluten free gravy!!!!!!!! The stuffing is probably ok, BUT I've yet to find a gluten free gravy that works for those of us that eat gluten.

So what do you suggest with the turkey?

Sweet Potatoes (roasted), Mash, mixed root vegetables, squash (i've developed a liking for spaghetti squash-always used to be butternut or acorn) and, if longing for links to home, peas.

All depends how big an appetite you and your family have AND how many others you are feeding. The List I gave you was from a Thanksgiving meal I went to last year in Leeds, West Yorks (the hostess is Canadian and her husband can eat and drink for europe) there were (including various kids) 11 of us.

Don't forget the cranberry sauce!!
