Thanks Giving...

Re: Thanks Giving...
I drew the short straw (again), and am working the long weekend. I had today off instead (on my own) and had a sleep in followed by day-time TV, now I'm off to buy some cheese!

We've got one that sings opera at 7:00 am on a Sunday. HID has forbidden me from shouting and throwing things at the guy. The **** doesn't even do requests.

Re: Thanks Giving...
Over at parents in law with the family for a nice turkey thats probably breathing its last breath in their yard around about now.
Mum in law makes the biggest suppers ever with a million and one bowls of accompaniments so a big nap will be in order too.
More than likely will be staying overnight as it will be accompanied by some form of alcoholic beverage, then off to get a new hairdo the morning after (if not too much alcohol is consumed the night before).
Awesome

I'm cooking the turkey today (are you supposed to have it today or tomorrow? ). This year I've decided to not bother timing it - but to use a fancy meat thermometer instead. Hopefully it will turn out better than my "you can't be too careful, better give it a bit longer cos I don't want to catch something dodgy" approach.

Re: Thanks Giving...
I ended up having two Thanksgiving dinners today. A turkey one at a friends and a Ham one at the M-i-L's. Then I got on a plane to Halifax for a flight to UK. And here the bloody flight is delayed by an hour. Happy bloody thanksgiving to all. (What's the Thanksgiving equivalent of Bah Humbug?)

Re: Thanks Giving...
We tried brining the turkey this year. To be honest I don't think it tasted any better or was any more moist or drier than your original approach, which I usually subscribe to, but with all the exotic spices and such, it made us feel terribly middle-class, dont you know.

We've bought a ready stuffed chicken, that I will cook later today. iIth roast potatoes, roast carrots and brussel sprouts, I might even do an apple pie, I'll see how homemade bakeryish I feel later.
It's the first thanksgiving weekend where we have actually thought about doing a proper meal, last minute decision.

Re: Thanks Giving...
we did ours yesterday lunchtime. A few family and friends - we were 11 round the table and made no inroads into the second half of a 19lb turkey, but there wasn't much left of the roast potatoes, parsnips, carrots, peas, brussels sprouts, bread sauce, cranberry sauce and gravy. One of our guests made a mississippi mud pie for dessert, which went very well with the half bottle of icewine we were given ages ago and never got round to drinking. Then we sat in overfed contemplation for just long enough for the kids to point out that it was time for tea and birthday cake (middle daughter's birthday is always right around thanksgiving, so we often end up celebrating both together).
For my sins, I do the meal... cooking in this household is normally a shared duty but a couple of years back when OH was v heavily pregnant at Thanksgiving and then in post-Caesarian recovery at Christmas I tried my hand at the whole roast dinner thing. I evidently didn't suck enough at it, and have now got the gig in perpetuity. SWMBO produces the birthday cakes, though - this one was a ladybird.

Nice cake hopefully it was well soaked with brandy.

When I popped the frozen stuffed chicken in the freezer yesterday, I glanced at the cooking instruction and read cook from frozen for 2.5 hours. What it actually says is cook from frozen for 3.5 hours covered and .5 hours uncovered.
I had, had two (small thankfully) glasses of very nice homemade red wine at the time of reading said cooking instructions.
We will be eating very late tonight as I of course have nothing else to cook instead - Oh well, it gives me time to make an apple pie now
