....thanks for the explanation, I thought there'd be a reason for it.

My son was working at Home Depot today, cutting Christmas Trees. They didn't have any insulated work gloves for him and made him wear plain work gloves. In -26 degrees.

He now has sore red hands ... "frost nip" .... which is the first stages of frostbite. He quit his job today

Home Depot as in the Home Depot that sell construction materials did not have any insulated gloves?

Couldn't they have just taken some from off the shelf for the poor sod?

Exactly! They do have insulated gloves for the staff, but none were available apparently, so he asked if he could take some off the shelf, but was told to use plain work gloves. He was outside his whole shift.

I think he should go and complain tomorrow, and show them his poor hands. Actually the one which is most affected was the where he burned it in the summer-time in a fire-pit accident. It was probably more susceptible.... This was what it looked like then

Yeah, I don't think the damage is that serious ... but he is a bit sore. We'll see what it looks like tomorrow, cos it if is really burned it'll look worse by the morning!

Heh ... Maybe I should embarrass him by turning up at work with him tomorrow and berating them for their treatment of my little boy!

We've already started getting the first frost-bite injuries on the burns unit this week .....

Anyone living in Leduc south of Edmonton will know by now what cold really is.

Currently -40°C but it was -46°C at 5:00 this morning with a windchill temp of -59°C

Last 24 hours at Edmonton International Airport which is just on the outskirts of Leduc. http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/trend..._metric_e.html

Current conditions at CYEG: http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/city/..._metric_e.html

Edit: That will apparently set a new record for low temp the old one of -44.5°C was set in 1977.

Wow, a 10.1 c difference between the low at the two airports...what is the difference..is one in the middle of town and the other way outside with different soil conditions/snow cover?

You got it in one.

Don't think the snow cover makes much of a difference but the "heat island" effect of being in the centre city makes a big difference.

Note on map Edmonton City Centre Airport top centre and Edmonton International Airport bottom centre.
