This evening I cooked a Kedgeree. OK I know that technically it's a breakfast dish but we've always had it as a main meal. It went down a treat.

Thai Basil do a decent take-out just round the corner from Stephos, on Thurlow.

I'm having Butternut Squash soup and posh bread tonight. To be honest it looks a bit shit.

I'm going to have a few people over for a bit celebration soon and I trying plan the food but I'm bit stuck on the sandwich front. As of now I can only think of egg and cress and ham and mustard. Any decent suggestions? I don't want any poncy ones or the Canadian salady ones where they drown everything in Miracle Whip.

Cheese and pickle, or spam and picalili:thumbup:
If you are looking to impress your guests, serve them in triangles with the crusts cut off.

That's a given. Not sure about Spam, that sounds a bit low rent as the party is for a celebration. Pardon the pun, but I was thinking of pushing the boat out and serving smoked salmon and as well crab sandwiches. I'm not doing cucumber as that's too much of a cliche and it'll just prompt unnecessary comments.

Don't waste smoked salmon in bread - scrap the sandwich idea and do the "appetizer" bit with the smoked salmon or prosciutto ham.

Square cracker, smear of boursin cheese or philadelphia and a fold of salmon or ham on top. Yummy, quick and looks nice!

Or if you havea few mins extra, wrap the prosciutto around a blob of mozzarella and half a cherry tomato. Skewer with a cocktail stick.

:)

I would always add a plate of spam sandwiches when it was my turn to do the cricket teas. Went down a storm every time. Crab sandwiches sounds nice, just don't get carried away and think it would be a good idea to serve volovants.

I like the salmon and Boursin idea although I think I'll stick with sandwiches and mini sausage rolls otherwise its going to get too complicated. For afters I'm going to attempt a Victoria sponge cake and also do jelly as a Swiss roll seems just a bit beyond my capacity. Thank you all for your suggestions.

roast beef & horseradish

cucumber & marmite

peanut butter & cream cheese (my son's absolute favourite sandwich )

goat's cheese & cranberry sauce (and if you have any left over from Christmas you'll save a bit of time & effort there)

brie & grapes (can be a bit difficult to do elegantly, those pesky grapes are a bugger to slice thinly, but if your nan is one of your guests she's likely to think you're ever so sophisticated...)

Sadly she won't be here and I also don't want to come across as all poncy and posh but I'll definitely get some nice slices of roast beef and do it with a little horseradish. Thanks, that's a great suggestion.

Just do a pot luck. Make sure they take their shoes off too!

It's all about integration remember....

Neither a pot luck or a bbq of hotdogs and hamburgers is going to happen if I've got anything to do with it and if anyone takes their shoes off, they can naff off out. :frown:

I HATE pot lucks with a passion - all too often there is virtually nothing that I can eat besides what I have taken as I have a dairy allergy (what is it with people putting cheese all over everything?)

Sarnie suggestions - Tuna mayo with sliced cucumber (or dill pickles if you prefer),
Smoked salmon and cream cheese
cheese and chutney (use a really good old cheddar),
Marmite and cream cheese (or do Nigella's marmite sandwiches where you mix marmite with butter and then spread it on the bread)
Chicken with curry mayo (ie coronation chicken)
BLT
Prawns/shrimp with a lemon mayo....

Can you tell from my suggestions that I like mayonnaise?

They are bloody awful. I tried very hard to eradicate them at work this year but one still managed to get through. Of course being a pot luck organiser is fine - lots of credit for an event with no effort and shit food.

I have no idea why people like them.

Thanks Chookie but I think I've got the menu sorted now. I agree Limahl-Martin, I hate pot lucks with a passion. I experienced way too many of those in graduate school.

I googled it and am not much wiser...could it be like a bowl of chilli? Or a shepherd's pie? I like both of those.

It's all of the above, and then some. A pot luck is a rather lazy way of throwing a party and having the guests provide the food. Everyone brings something, not necessarily coordinated with anyone else's offering, and plonks it on the table. You then shuffle around in a buffet fashion, eating a combination of food you would not normally choose.

Pot luck lunches were popular in my previous office. Despite being located in downtown Toronto with every conceivable type of food on offer within walking distance, the locals opted to sit in a meeting room with a bizarre concoction of food and not a drink in sight.

That's a pot luck, avoid if you can!

Pot lucks - everyone brings something to contribute to a communal "pot" of food (ie puts it on a table for everyone else to share).

The luck part comes in to it because if you are lucky, some of it will be edible...

Chilli, lasagne etc are all common as are salads and dips and those gross buttercream covered cakes they sell in Costco...

And at one memorable Halloween pot-luck party I went to, every single one of the 15 guests bar me brought pumpkin pie... Now I do like the odd slice of pumpkin pie, but 14 of them was a bit much!

I took some freshly baked (and still warm!) home-made bread and a pat of butter as my contribution.

I was "introduced" to a pot-luck at work for Xmas 2010.

By Xmas 2011 I had reorganized our "do" and though we still had no budget, my lovely colleagues were guided as to what we might need. :sneaky:

NYE was pot luck at sis in laws. We donated a big pot of chilli and buns, 2 bottles of whipped cream / candy floss flavoured vodka and a bottle of rye.

The plan was to go skating on their frozen pond - the reality was the guys took the kids skating and the girls started drinking early

Had only been here 2 days when invited to a pot luck (had to ask a random stranger what a pot luck was just incase it involved car keys in a bowl or something) I was the only one who took booze:confused: felt so strange the host bringing me one of my own beers from his fridge every half an hour while everybody else was drinking coffee. Those piss-ed brits and their pub culture eh!

We are going to have homemade chicken tikka masala for our tea tonight. Since about 7am this morning, the chicken cubes have been gently marinating in yogurt, fresh ginger paste, fresh garlic paste, fresh cilantro and a combination of Kashmiri chilli powder, salt, freshly ground cumin and coriander, Punjabi garam masala and turmeric.

We were only contemplating last night how that the only processed food we ever eat are jars of curry sauce. We really should try making something ourselves as your recipe sounds rather good. I suspect sourcing all the ingredients here is rather more of a challenge than in Van though.

Pan fried cod here tonight.;)

You should be alright, you can use a combination of 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper and 1 1/2tsp sweet paprika in place of Kashmiri chilli. If you need the recipe I'll write it out for you.
