Finnan haddie is definitely a Scottish thing - it's haddock, not cod, cold-smoked over peat. A haddie is Scots slang for a haddock, and Finnan is derived from a place-name in Aberdeenshire.

Scouse and I were just talking about this last night. He loved finnan haddie when he was a kid in Liverpool (except I'm sure he called it finnie haddie )

No idea what sort of fish it was but in Oz mum used to cook us something called 'South African fillet' - it was some kind of smoked fish and was bright orange. She served it with a white parsley sauce, mashed spuds and peas, we loved it (whatever it was!)

Ok, I got curious so googled it. Apparently south african fillet is smoked cod. I thought it was just a made up name.

In the 1960's the grocery stores here sold big cans of finnan haddie and chicken haddie (same sauce, but, you know, chicken) and it was really good and it was cheap too. I wonder if that canned stuff was haddock. It was before fish prices went through the roof so good chance. I think I could make it with any of our local eating fish and it would be good, but the burbot tails were very well suited. The back part of that fish (a relative of the cod in the ocean) isn't as fatty as the front fillets so it smokes up a bit more dry, and peels right off the bone.

Curry and chips.

I've been making Stroganoff sauces and then, with leftovers and a Japanese curry square (Glico, Golden Curry etc) making a curry to die for.

Thank you! I just remembered the gorgonzola in the fridge, opened it and had a bite. Best Before July 23, but it seems fine... how would you know unless it was moving?
So while the shrimp are chilling for shrimp cocktail I'm having pumpernickel and butter and blue cheese; a pre-appetizer appetizer.

We can go and visit caretaker for two weeks and enjoy the many culinary delights he makes for himself. What season should we aim for?

I had an early supper of breaded pork chops and chips, paired with potato vodka and tonic of uncertain vintage.
