Why would you need a tattoo to remind you of a significant date?

Surely an Iphone is better, AND it will play a musical reminder once a year ;)

I suppose its like any tattoo, the reasons behind the majority are personal and a kind of way of saying "this is how much I love / loved you"

I could have bought a stuffed nodding head duck and put it on the dash of the truck - it would have been cheaper and less painful  (not that they hurt too much btw)

I love the bed too and I'm gutted it's got to go. Hmm, maybe we should wait a bit, in case I decide that a log bed would look better in the new place (I prefer it to the 'grander' one we've got) OH thinks we should go modern, but I think we're more country:rofl::rolleyes:

Seriously Piff I'd keep it unless you are really needing the room in which case i'll look after it for you til you move and if you want it back we'll bring it back - and if you don't I may have gotten too attatched to let it go in which case it's a done deal

I had my first tattoo done when i was 18. It is of the grim reaper cricket ball in hand, bowling left arm over. I believe its unique as we made it up on the day.
This was done at the pub over the road, while filling the tattooist up with 2 or 3 beers. to help his shakes subside.

You think, that if one was in a positon to examine that type of tattoo closely the last thing they'd need was more visual stimulation.

Personally, I don't know many pikeys but I do know a lot of people with tattoos.

I have no issue with your tattoes but I do wonder how wearing one's hair in the manner of a Shuana Sand himbo goes over in the far north.

The tattoo probably has more wrinkles than she did when the bucket was kicked.

I've just had to Google Shuana Sand - I must be getting old.
For reference, the 'himbo' photo was about 17 years ago in my Ibiza clubbing era. I now have a (receeding) No1 all over in my natural colour.
The accent already raises enough questions and looks - I think a 6ft2 peroxide blonde englishman might just push the locals over the edge.

I thought as much and so wondered how you were managing. The idea that you were ok up there tempted me to venture as far as Barrie, I shan't risk that now.

I have one that covers all of my lower back. I got it when I was 36 and it's very meaningful for me - it reminds me that my guardian angel is always watching my back.

I don't really have any plans for another, and I'm really happy with it still. I had thought of getting one when I was 18, but didn't because I couldn't be sure that I would still like it later in life.

Where my tattoo is, it isn't visible unless I really want to show it off, and a lot of the time I forget that it's there. I will probably have it touched up in the next few years though, as it's beginning to fade slightly, and I'd like it to remain being a sharp dark black.

People are entitled to their own opinions, but i think nowadays people with tattoo's out number those without

I have 6 'tramp stamps'

my first was when i was 19 and the last one was when i was 29, I Have mine and my sons initial in chinese, top of my leg i also have his name, at the bottom of my back i have a symbol for love,on my left shoulder a lilly on my ribs and 4 stars down te top of my back.

Do i regret them, NO....they are things i have done in my life and are personal to me, i dont give a shit if people like them or not they are for me. I was the first person in my family to get a tattoo as neither of my parents have them. If someone wants to judge me on my tattoo's thats their issue not mine, they can be covered up or shown off whatever i choose to do!

I'm only asking here, not judging or anything....But why is it that people get names/initials and whatnot tattooed in Chinese and not English? It seems fair enough if you speak the language, but what is the attraction for someone who does not? Why are Chinese letters more fashionable than, say, Greek ones?

Tattoo's make people look interesting so it stands to reason that chinese characters will make people look even more interesting and also a bit mysterious. Greek doesn't work because that reminds people of maths which is boring.

(incidently it's why I have thai characters on my tag line - it's a desperate attempt to make people think I'm an interesting person to know, not that it works, but then maybe it's not permanent enough)

Oh. Working on that logic, I wonder if there are lots of Chinese people walking around with letters of the alphabet etched on them? A big black Q, to symbolise the meaning of life, or love, or something deep.

(I always thought you had been messing around with the funny fonts and couldn't turn it off again)

Have a look at this

"The guy at the tattoo shop told me this means brave and proud warrior in English,” said beaming Beijing teenager Hao Tsang as he pointed to the letters GARF freshly inked onto his left bicep. “It’s perfect for me because I am very bold and confident, yet spiritual.”

Tsang’s friend Yuan Chi Hao also went under the needle for some English language characters. “Mine simply says FRUNK. The letters are so beautiful and flow so smoothly into each other. The word actually means old soul with young spirit in English. How cool is that?”

Apparently, very cool.

Throngs of Chinese youths are flocking to tattoo parlors looking to colorfully emboss their bodies with “meaningful” English language words.

“I couldn’t decide between CRYMPH or DLECH,” said Chengdu high school student Mingmei Lee. “I know they both mean beautiful flower dancing in the wind in American, but I can’t decide what looks prettier.”

I smell a rat, but its funny anyway...

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=frunk!

Seems strangely appropriate to me...

Ive no tats, and no desire to have any. Sometimes I just shake my head and wonder what people are A: Thinking, and B: Going to think in 30 years time, but its their choice and I shouldnt judge too harshly.

I guess Im just a middle class boy who inherited his parents prissy middle class values.

Before getting one done, I suggest having a look at those here, and avoiding anything like that at all costs. Also make sure the tattoo artist can spell.

I have one tattoo - it is Mr Chookie and my name translated into Elvish and then into Tolkien's elvish writing. (I am a huge Tolkien fan and did the translations myself).

I do plan on getting two more - one of little flowers on my foot with vines and leaves - one flower for each of the kids and each one coloured in one of the kids favourite colours (so that would be purple, yellow, blue and pink). And then I also want a crown as one of my nicknames means crown in Hindi. Not sure where I want that one put.

Mr Chookie has a lincolnshire imp on his calf.

Is Mr Chookie from Lincoln then or does he just like the look of the Imp as a Tattoo? Seems a specific choice of odd looking creature for a tattoo.....

I have 2 tattoo's, one on my hip that is a cover up for a crappy version of a celtic symbol (tattooist was rubbish!!) that I had done when I was 18 and one on my shoulder blade of a rose which is in memory of a friend who died. Always fancied getting another, maybe with my son's name or something to represent him but not sure....

I have two just now, a cartoon dragon on my upper right arm which I've had 18 years and my son's name on my left wrist which I had 2 years ago. I don't regret either.

I'm 41 and in 30 years time I'll look at these, plus any others I might have, and be thankful that I got them and didn't take life too damn seriously

Why is it necessary to label others for their choices (pikey, chav, etc) just because they don't fit in with your ideals ?.

He is from Boston (the real one, not the US version), but is particularly fond of the entire area. He did live for a time in both Lincoln and Skegness as well.

ITA.

While I don't particularly like the look of tramp-stamps and I have no desire to have one myself, I don't judge those who do have one.

The one tat that I have means a lot to me, and the others I want will be very personal as well.

Like Stonedog, I am in my early 40's. I don't regret the one tattoo I have, and I seriously doubt that I will regret it or any others that I get when I am old. Heck, I don't regret any of the piercings that I have either.

I get that some people don't like the idea of body modification for themselves, but seriously - why do you need to look down on those who do want a tattoo?

Do those same people also look down on anyone who gets their ears pierced? or is that OK because it is a mainstream form of body modification?

When I look at an image of Bart Simpson or Jesus on a stranger's face or neck I'm afraid I cringe. It looks as stupid to me as a goatee. I see it as a career limiting move and cannot accept that any thinking person would imagine an attachment to either long enough lasting to want to project it toward everyone they encounter.

I managed to get my most recent job with a very visible tattoo and Mr S has never been out of work despite the various tattoos on his arms. I guess it depends on the career choices people make for themselves and those who wish to join industries where tattoos are frowned upon are more likely to have them in more discreet areas.

As for the goatee, I can't say I've ever considered Mr Stonedog stupid looking but I'm off for another look with razor in hand
