Yesterday,

As a non planey person i don't understand why, if the plane was amphibious, that it didn't land in the lake instead?

If an amphib tries to land on water with wheels down ( or even just one) they tend to flip upside down

That's probably not a good thing, right?

Well they do that deliberately with kayaks, could be a nice stunt trick?

"I'm just glad he landed safely" said a witness, through gritted teeth as he put away his phone video camera and kissed goodbye to any hopes of selling the dramatic crash footage.

I'm not sure if anyone has ever tried to eskimo roll a float plane.

I think it does qualify as one of those "things we generally try to avoid doing"

I could ask my instructor but he may wonder what I plan on getting up to when he cuts me loose for my next solo flight , so maybe not.

(especially as I didn't exactly do what I was meant to last time either!)

plan spam. I'm sure what the instructor says is only for guidance anyway

I often wonder about the float planes. We get quite a few passing overhead from, I guess, the Ottawa River to some lake or other. They come low, seem to have the aerodynamic qualities of a brick and move very slowly. How the hell do they stay in the air?

the best I can figure is a honking big engine and an insane pilot

the local guys who take off the amphibs from City are certifiable. Even when using the runway they pull of moves that would have my instructor grounding me permanently.

I think we have the makings of a TV series here.

"Billy Bishop Certifiables" <working title>

no one calls it Billy Bishop

to ATC it is still "City Tower" you call (or City ground)

Occasionally I hear someone call it "Billy-Bob" airport which amuses me for some reason

it was a silly name to pick , although I fully intend to fly from the "South terminal" to the "North terminal" when I get my license

There is more than one terminal?

I didn't think the island was big enough.

I used to fly a 172 amphib and it had no bother getting off the water. Hardly a honking big engine ! I might well be insane though.

bigger engine than my little R model though I suspect.

I've seen the guys at City turn onto final half way down the runway
