Suitable role models?

OK, so following on from the Brazt thread, who do you think are good role models for children, and in fact, all of us as we all need inspiration sometimes? I love:

Stephen Hawking
Condaleeza Rice
Bill Gates
Michael Vaughn
Zara Phillips

I'm sure I'll think of more. :)

Anyone who is truly content in following their own path. Preferably not a celebrity.

Re: Suitable role models?

I dont think I was even aware of "celebrities" when I grew up in the 70s. Whether thas becauses I was sheltered from the whole idea by my parents, or just cos the media was not 24/7 obsessed with them I couldnt say.

Emlyn Hughes and Kevin Keegan should be added to the earlier list;) Guess where that part of my youth was spent;)

I like Ms. Burchill. Kind, generous, commercial successful, sexually adventurous, shame about all the drugs and the sheer volume of her.

Zara Phillips does seem a worthy role model, the more so for her reputation for ferocious social activity. I should not be ashamed of children who turned out to be dirty horsey women.

It's her voice (Julie's that is). I just can't get beyond that to the thoughtful, intelligent woman that you say she is...

Luckily I met her before I ever heard her on the radio, she didn't sound so dreadful in person so I think she piles it on for the meejah.

How about parents and grandparents who have moral and ethical values that include tolerance, acceptance, love, and the ability show compassioon for those less fortunate. These traits, if passed down to their kids, will make them wonderful caring and nurturing adults.

My role models are my parents and grandparents, both sets who immigrated to canada with next-to-nothing, had a fabulous work and moral ethics and became valuable members of society. Once they became canadians they never looked back.

I hope that jim and I are passing on the same values to our two small kids.

Why would any parent want someone else to be a role model for their kids. This is something that the parents should be teaching their kids everyday.

You're absolutely right, of course. Sadly lots of children don't have good role models in their parents, and boys are especially lacking in male role models it seems. I also think it is valuable for children to have heroes that are not their parents.

Just thought of another one - Paul Watson. And he's Canadian.

Because the children do not have parents and grandparents who have moral and ethical values that include tolerance, acceptance, love, and the ability show compassioon for those less fortunate. Neither do the parents particularly value these traits. The people I have suggested display characteristics, such as single minded brutality in the pursuit of their goals, that I think would better serve my children than the defining characteristics of their parents.

<wonders who Paul Watson is, supposes that's because he's Canadian>

Ahhh, DBD and you a tree-hugger? Here he is: http://www.seashepherd.org/crew-watson.html

I did think he was an Australian for ages until I heard him speaking, and then (shamefully) I thought he was a Yank for a while.

Not having kids, I think it would be great if parents brought up their daughters to look like sexy French newsreaders. It'd make the world a much more cheerful place.

I've been told I sound like Fiona Bruce, that any good?

Paul Watson would be a very contraversial (sp!) role model over here in Newfoundland. (agree with dbd on that one)

For me - my granny on my dad's side (didn't have to be anything other than myself for her to think i am fantastic), and my granpa on my mum's side (can do anything you want - he's a computer fanatic at the age of 87).

Also, Paul Resesaubaugu (sp!!!!) the guy from Hotel Rwanda. Just started his autobiography.

Well, it is more his stand against the Japanese whaling fleet that floats my boat (so to speak). I can see why he would not be loved by any fishing fleet as he advocate a complete ban on all fishing. And lets not mention seals and how fluffy and white and cute the babies are...;)

He also wants to reduce the human population. I'd rather not be a victim.

I think he wants the birth rate reduced, which seems fairly sensible to me.

iirc that faction in the Sierra Club split wanted a great deal more than that. Firstly they wanted to stop immigration to the US and, implicitly, Canada, they also wanted China style limits on reproduction.
