Haven't you heard of the dude that it was so big when he got excited he fainted as all the blood went from his head to his whatsit.

Now that would be a bit of a problem eh?

I used to know a surgeon who told people he was a butcher as he was weary of people telling him about their varicose veins.
Try working in IT, OMG. "There's something wrong with my computer at home, what do you think???" Let me just turn on my psychic probe...

And then I sit in meetings with people who don't even know (and should know, in their position) what a "web browser" is. Or what version of Windows they have on their client computers, etc.

My hubby works in IT and anytime he goes to someone's house where something electrical has broken they ask him to fix it.... Literally "my tv isn't working - will you take a look"

I do not know the faintest thing about how my three computers work or what version of Star Trek they use. I let our IT minions deal with all that stuff. I find it quite amusing to sit here and watch the cursor move around the screen, directed by some bloke in his kitchen in Surrey.

Oh yes, because he's got a "technical mind", which means you can apparently fix anything. Because of course I knew how to do IT purely because I have a technical mind. The years of training and experience have nothing to do with it.

Not disputing they should know, just wanted to say that I was probably on-line for at least a couple of years without being familiar with the word 'browser' at all. Not knowing didn't affect me.

Having said that I'm certain there are many people holding positions in life for which certain things SHOULD be known but aren't.

While agreeing about being online in the days of the usenet, your second paragraph is a little confusing.

<was this a discussion of IT or of job stereotypes?>?

Yes it was. I couldn't think of a way to phrase the two separate issues better. Perhaps separately?

Steve said And then I sit in meetings with people who don't even know (and should know, in their position) what a "web browser" is. Or what version of Windows they have on their client computers, etc.

I was just making a point that people in positions where they should know things but don't is not limited to IT. Not that he said it was of course.

Some just have a baffling talent for fooling others.

This is very true of CBSA management in certain cases. I had been speaking several months ago to a PNP manager from my Province and suggested that due to the recent and upcoming changes in CIC and within their programme perhaps it might be an idea to have a meeting and informal overview.
Well lo and behold the meeting took place the other day with several Regional Directors and supervisors and no representation from our work location.
I can just imagine a Regional Director figuring out how to confirm a Confirmation Of Permanent Resident form and entering the details into FOSS.

Nothing wrong with not knowing something. It's when it's willful that I lose respect for people - you know the sort that says 'i'm no good at something' without even making an effort. Especially when they are asking for help at it.

I mean, I'm a long way from being an IT guy, but it seems to that 99% of the time you can fix computer stuff just by reading what's on the screen and using google.
