I've come to learn where the favourite OPP spots are around here. They seem to have a few "go-to" places. Presumably with a steady stream of fools ready to gun it right past their radar. Easy winner is Puslinch/Flamborough townline on Highway 6 northbound (edge of Hamilton's northern city limit). Drops from 80 to 60 despite it being essentially the middle of nowhere. Must see a cop there at least half the times I drive that route perched behind a telegraph pole. They must take it in turns every single day for the amount of times I see one standing there.

Highway 6 is nasty though, isolated or not. There have been a lot of fatal accidents on it - and in winter it's not a good road to have to drive - so I can fully understand the requirement to reduce speed.

Had heard it was a dangerous road. Never had too much difficulty driving it last winter myself. Plenty of makeshift crosses along it though :s

The stretch from Mount Forest to Guelph is terrible. It's two lanes in one direction, one lane the other, and it's busy so there's always someone in/on a tractor or Harley or RV chugging along at 50mph on the one lane section causing a long tail back. On the two lane section people typically choose the outer lane so, when someone loses his or her temper at the tail back and crosses the double lines to overtake, they're on a collision course with the vehicle coming in the wrong lane the other way.

It's be safer it they repainted it as a three lane road with the centre one for overtaking as highway 10 was until recently. At least then some people will make an effort to drive in the north or south bound lane rather than the middle one.

In Alberta how it works is there is a points system, but you need to get 15 points to have your licence suspended and even then you can get a "restricted" licence that allows for essential travel, e.g. to work, so pretty much impossible to get your licence yanked unless you do something really really bad.

15 km/h over the speed limit is only a 2-point offence. Tickets from speed cameras have no points, regardless of speed.

And... if you challenge the ticket in court they automatically reduce the number of points by 50% to stop people clogging up the courts.

It's a joke frankly. Never understand why people use the translucent licence plate covers to obscure the number, because that is an offence. Okay you might get fined but the odds of losing your licence for speeding are pretty much nil.

And now RCMP have started doing enforcement using helicopters, so they're hovering over residential areas trying to catch people speeding through construction zones. Usually on a Sunday.

I managed to get a speeding ticket in Montana, that takes some doing. I was 10 mph over the limit, they don't give you a ticket, they give you a bail notice and bail is $20, if you fail to appear they seize the bail fee.

And... for anyone wondering... there is no driver compact between the US and Canada because the Americans are paranoid about Canada having access to their driver licence information, so if you get stopped for speeding in the US it does not go on your record in Canada.

The usual procedure is to stake out a construction zone on a weekend when people are more likely to speed. Both CPS and RCMP do that.

Okotoks are the worst for speed enforcement, that's all their PD seems to do, stake out Hwy 2.

Yep you would think, I guess only lazy people get all the points. But really the lazy people are the smart ones because like I said, you've got to get 15 points, so unless you drive fast all the time you're not going to get your licence yanked.

The insurance company counts the tickets, not the points, so other than saying whoopee, I've got less points, why go to court? If you're someone who is a really bad driver. So there are apparently enough really bad drivers that they try and speed up the court system by halving the points.

I seem to remember there was a scandal about it a few years back when someone who had had his points halved had some major accident with a bus or something, but like I said, even if you get 15 points, you can still have a restricted licence.
