The joys of winter. It was was snowing when got up yesterday and it still is. I think we're at about 30cm so far.
Mercifully, it's powder. The anticipated freezing rain during the night appears to have missed us, which is just as well because the plough came during the night and there is a huge windrow at the bottom of my driveway. I spent close to three hours shovelling yesterday afternoon. The two of us spent a further two hours in the evening, finishing at about ten. Admittedly we did spend some of that being neighbourly. Add to that a bus strike in Ottawa today and the fact that one of the five bridges is partially closed, and you have a bit of a mare.

We had your freezing rain. I was amused to arrive at work this morning (after 47 miles) with 4" of snow still frozen to the roof and back of the Beetle, only the windshield and door windows are not encrusted.

As if by magic, the huge windrow has disappeared. Jean must have finished the bottle of cognac I gave him last February.

How long did that take you? Souvette's commute, to a building I could see from here if a hill wasn't in the way, took an hour and a half each way yesterday. It took about the same this morning.

The previous day's total precip is also available on tha main weather forecast page e.g. http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/city/..._metric_e.html but does not differentiate snow and rain.

Sounds like the Ice Storm of 1998 in Ontario and Quebec. Landlocked for one week, no buses, trains, planes, cars, heat or electricity. Lived through it as a visitor for the holiday to be with my fiancee and came back for more. Not apparently an unusual situation.
Yesterday we awoke to the highly dangerous thing called freezing rain which in turn turns to black ice/sheet ice. Not little patches of the stuff on damp corners but everywhere. Roads closed, pavements to icy to stand up on, even back lanes were slippy, it was horrible and only the second time we have experienced the stuff since being here - this is our 4th winter. I would trade black ice for snow anyday. Funnily enough that's what we woke up to today
Only about 1/2 inch and now it's being drizzled away.
So far every winter we have had has popped something new up, not one has been the same as the last - hey it's exciting not knowing quite what to expect

Environment Canada has up to nearly the previous day if you select daily rather than hourly e.g. http://www.climate.weatheroffice.ec....ilydata_e.html but not all stations have separate snow and rain data.

Select daily in the search options. The day will grey out leaving the month (Dec) and the year (2008).
Hit the Go button (at the end of the drop-down box).
Select a city near you using either the map or the drop-down box for city and Go.
If you select, say Ottawa, there will be a column for each of rainfall, snow, total precipitation and snow on ground but if you choose Peterborough, there will only be information in the total precip column.
Hope this helps.

It started snowing yesterday at around 6 am, I walked the dog and it steadily got worse and it carried on until about 3pm when it stopped for a bit. Then it started again and now we have several inches of snow and people have died this weekend on the roads already. It's blinking cold at -24 and even colder when the wind blows.
Going to get the dog some muttlucks later as he keeps holding his paws up for me to get the ice off them
He is very happy with the snow situation - but not happy that it takes me 5 times as long to get ready to take him for a walk.

-29 on the car thermometre thingie at about 6pm yesterday. It warmed up to a balmy -21 by midnight - but f-f-freezing again this morning
Our dog is not happy, but won't keep the silly booties on, just bites them off then wanders around with one paw in the air at a time! And he really needs to 'go', if you get what I mean !
