Is "hail" not a known term here/U.S? I've seen it described as "ice pellets" - that's hail innit?

[smug mode]

Today we had the first real snow - a mighty 5cm/2 inches that soon melted away under the rain and rising temps. This week looks a tad damp but mild. Newfoundland doing its Vancouver impressions.

Happy shovelling!

No, it's as advertised ice pellets. Hail comes from thunderstorms in the summertime.

That's not a very long walk.

You'll be happy to know that WJBK now shows the temp for their neighbours in Windsor in metric. I am appalled though, obviously ;)

Is WJBK radio or TV...here in Ottawa we get the US affiliates from Detroit and I don't think I've seen metric temps given on the weather on the TV news.

WJBK is Fox - they occasionally show Windsor on the weather map and sometimes in metric, sometimes in imperial, depends how lazy the weather man is feeling I guess.

I've shovelled in a full-face balaclava.

For your purposes, I think the forecast is getting better as you quoted 50 cm of snow in the next few days..I believe you got that from The Weather Network..now The Weather Network is saying a max of 28 cm in the next few days.

Here in Ottawa, I don't mind the snow its the -20 c and high winds and trying to avoid people who don't brush off their car roofs (or other areas) and then head out on the roads.

Ah, we get that channel here in Ottawa.......here in Ottawa, we can get some radio stations from northern New York that tell you the temp on the US side in f and on the Canadian side in c.

I once had a sheet of ice that flew off the roof of a vehicle in front of me come through my windshield. It gave me quite a fright but, on balance, I can't see that the driver was to blame. Even if one is willing to spend the time to clear the snow and ice it's not obvious how one can reach the roof of a van or SUV. I think flying ice is just a feature of driving in adverse conditions such as prevail from November to May.

-20 though, yes, that's hell.

I bought a snow brush in Zellers at the weekend and noticed they had extendable handle brushes too. I guess you do need a certain amount of bodily height to begin with though to make use of them....

The forecast does seem to change hourly.

Cracking morning up here. Not a cloud in the sky (could be different down the hill).
