A small weather related rant!
Yes, I know it's Canada, and I know I moved to the Maritimes all on my own, and I wasn't brought here under force.....but won't it EVER stop bloody raining. It's just sodding bucketing down, it's been going without let or hindrance for days, and more and yet more is forecast!
Don't tell me let me guess....it's not a'raining up Richmond Hill! Can I come and stay with someone where it's dry please?:( |
Re: A small weather related rant!
It rains quite a bit on coastal BC, too, where we live. It did take some getting used to after we moved here from Alberta which is a lot colder and drier in winter and doesn't get many rainy days even in summer. We just scheduled all kinds of indoor things to do when it was really wet, such as playing musical instruments, sorting out books and CDs, or cleaning out the garage. I think the lack of sun is what makes it so depressing. You need sun for your skin to manufacture vitamin D. Lack of this vitamin does cause depression so do keep up taking supplements.
Apart from indoor stuff, we simply got some long backpacker capes and explorer sandals and went out on the beach anyway. I understand how miserable it can be when the rain seems unending but you do get used to it after a while and just get on with your life. At least you have a good excuse not to do any gardening when the rain is bucketing down. Billy Connolly's "Wellie Song" might cheer you up a bit. Best wishes. |
Re: A small weather related rant!
But don't you like sitting in the warm, coffee in hand, gazing out at it?:)

Re: A small weather related rant!
Who'd have thought the weather would be a bit rubbish in Canada?

Re: A small weather related rant!
It's usually rainy in May. That's what tops up our pool and fills our well to see us through the summer. Plus the grass is more green throughout the summer months.
My Scottish friends on Facebook are saying its a fab day because its sunny - but it's 13C. Here it's 23C! |
Re: A small weather related rant!
Don't worry, it'll stop raining soon. The sun will come out and it will warm up. Then the blackflies appear...;)

Re: A small weather related rant!
Nice and sunny here too although a tad on the cool side overnight

Re: A small weather related rant!
Over the last couple of weeks, I've driven through (in order) NS, NB, ME, NH, MA, CT, NY (the state not the city) then CT, MA, VT, NH, ME, NB, NS.
The weather was great for all of the 3,500kms of the road trip, except in NB and ME where it was either foggy, rainy or both. Even the weather on top of Mount Washington (home of the "world's worst weather") was better than the weather in NB  |

We've got 50 mls over the weekend! Sort of knowing that the weather in Canada can be a bit rubbish is one thing, but the physical act of sitting here whilst it's comming down like stair rods is giving me the pip, and it's cold too 6 degrees presently. Thank you for your kind responses, those of you in sunnier climes....thank your lucky stars...or alternatively, your better judgement in choosing your location:huh: |
Re: A small weather related rant!
24 degrees and sunny here in Newfoundland. We could actually do with some rain - been a very dry spring here so far! Those of us with wells, starting to worry.

Do we have many members from Newfoundland or Labrador? I really want to come for a visit to your neck of the woods, as everything I see about it looks beautiful. By the sounds of it, perhaps it might be a good place to escape to for a spot of sun.

And the dreaded June bugs of course. |
Re: A small weather related rant!
Last summer in Toronto I was almost eaten alive. Don't think they were mozzies...but the bites itched like hell. It took about 4 months for the bites to disappear.

Re: A small weather related rant!
I thought all flies were black? I wonder if there's a reason why there's so many about?

Re: A small weather related rant!
The Horse Fly is big and brown. I usually meet one when I go to the beach. He likes to try to bite me on my leg.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._Tabanus_2.jpg Black Flies are tiny and squishy and attack in swarm formations. When you feel them bite and swat them off, they usually explode leaving fly bits and blood all over the place. http://msue.anr.msu.edu/uploads/imag...ritt%20MSU.jpg Deer Fly are about the same size as a regular house fly. They have pretty patterns on their wings and bite you through your clothes. I hate Deer Fly the most. http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/course/ent0...eer_fly_ad.jpg |
Re: A small weather related rant!
Horse/deer flies are dreadful. You feel them taking a chunk out of you. The bite is bothersome for months too. :frown: I have also been bitten in Toronto by something similar...but it looked more like a black house fly...but slightly smaller. Bit me on the top of my foot when I was in a store. I felt it...looked down and saw it fly off.
I've posted about this before but the only time bugs don't bite me during the summer months is if a carry a small device from Lentek. |

Re: A small weather related rant!
They are a tan coloured beetle...about 1/2" to 3/4" long.

Bristol....be gentle, I'm fragile.... June bugs are usually around by now but the rain keeps them away. They are like beetles but they fly - after dark - and are attracted by light. You will hear them bouncing of your windows just like large moths, but they're louder as the 'shell' is harder against the window than a soft moth. They're harmless but if you're on your deck on a warm evening and there's a light source, they'll head for it. But you must be used to worse in France and other places? I was at Montpelier airport once, standing on some grass and looking down saw a horrible looking thing. Like an extremely large cockroach, but slow. It must have been 4" long and about 2" wide. |
Re: A small weather related rant!
There are blackflies in north-central and northern Saskatchewan but not down south. No-see-ums can be painful, sort of a junior blackfly, and on the beach there can be sandfleas. They concentrate mostly on your ankles. The two bugs to watch for are the culex tarsalis mosquito which carries West Nile disease and deer ticks which carry Lyme Disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Any kind of tick bites in quantity can produce headaches and sore joints, etc. Also, if you're in a recently flooded area there is a mutation of mosquitos that are a little bit bigger than usual and a real dark soot black in colour. Those have particularly nasty long lasting poison. Brrrrr.

Oh we had all sorts:eek: In France, but somehow "Canada" "should" be different, it's all about frost bite and snow shovelling and the great white lawn and facing adversity with aplomb....not juicy looking insects, humidity rashes and sleepless hot nights (of the wrong sort!). It's certainly turning into a first year full of contrasts and extremes:huh:

Re: A small weather related rant!
Speaking of weather, I never had satellite in the UK.
Did heavy rain/thundery atmosphere cause loss of TV reception over there as it does here? |
