hi lisadd
what about ebaying all those bits you think you might throw?.....seriously, i've just made £750+ pounds in week and the only 'big' bit was the dining table......a really good result and i've not really tried yet; i've got loads......could get enough to buy a house....lol.....!

Bit of both really, bin the rubbish, ship the good stuff.
Some things are pricey over here, beds and bedding. Some stuff is cheaper, and most of your electricals are not worth bringing. Houses are bigger, so you need more to fill them.
We sent all the sentimental stuff, the good furniture and the beds and bedding. Clothes, toys, computer (dual voltage), kitchen stuff, books etc.
My OH brought over his 'good' tools, and binned the rubbish.
We emptied and sold the contents of a shed, the garage, the loft, the friends garage, the garden, the friends yard, sold 7 cars, a caravan, a trailer, and a partridge in a pear tree.
If you haven't needed it for 2 years , don't bring it (that rule does not apply to the OH though
).

Hi there
We are going to ship ... although our furniture is not great I am hoping to get some nice antiques from the auctions and ship those - there are some great buys to be had. We have recently bought a new bed, we both have bycicles, OH has tools and hobby aircraft and it would cost a great deal to replace them.
So we will be shipping binning and buying![Smile](https://britishexpats.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)
have fun
Claire

BIN BIN BIN , don't spend thousands shipping rubbish half way around the world, you are going to be without most of it for the first 3/4 weeks while you are waiting for the container to arrive anyway. So you will end up buying , plates, pans, bins, unless you are staying in an hotel until you stuff arives in Canada..... two words DOLLAR SHOP , really not worth the hassle.

if you add up the replacement cost of replacing all your 'stuff' that you are thinking of binning and not taking to canada, then put that against the cost of the shipping.....which is the greater?
personally, we're taking everything that will go into a 40ft container and at £7000 to vancouver, it's a steal........four men, four days, packing everything so that it dosen't break (!!!!), 6/7 weeks on a boat and delivered to your door in canada; oh! and un-packed again for you....amazing value really, when you think about it.
how much is a replacement 3 piece suite?, 4 beds, dining table, display cabinets, rugs, kitchen stuff, motorbike, bookcases, personal stuff....etc etc etc.....

Looked at loads of web sites and on our last trip trawling the shops as well as houses well show homes mainly didn't think it fair to go and look at private homes as i knew we wouldn't be buying yet, realised we would need lots of furniture anyway so still an excuse to get more, can be selective though instead of rushing to get beds etc,
Good quality furniture is more expensive, have some pieces that are quite special, had to save for and love,
Also feel it would not be fair to little man 7yrs old to get rid of everything he has chosen with us for his bedroom and play room, he will need a container just for his toys, we are choosing to move to Canada a long way from family and friends, i would like some familiar things around me as well as new,
We will go into a rental first anyway and if we need to get cheap Ikea plates etc we will donate them to the next expat family if they want them when our stuff arrives

Done this twice (three this if you include the return to the UK)
First time binned almost everything, when you add up the cost of replacing and the drop in quality v's cost of shipping
Next time shipped everything and then threw away slowly this side as we opened the boxes
